Differing Opinions About Jesus
7:40When they heard these words, some of the crowd108 began to say, “This really109 is the Prophet!”1107:41Others said, “This is the Christ!”111 But still others said, “No,112 for the Christ doesn’t come from Galilee, does he?1137:42Don’t the scriptures say that the Christ is a descendant114 of David115 and comes from Bethlehem,116 the village where David lived?”1177:43So there was a division in the crowd118 because of Jesus.119
Footnotes
- 108 Or “The common people” (as opposed to the religious authorities like the chief priests and Pharisees).
- 109 Or “truly.”
- 110 The Prophet is a reference to the “prophet like Moses” of Deut 18:15, by this time an eschatological figure in popular belief.
- 111 Or “the Messiah” (Both Greek “Christ” and Hebrew and Aramaic “Messiah” mean “one who has been anointed”). See the note on Christ in .
- 112 An initial negative reply (“No”) is suggested by the causal or explanatory γάρ (gar) which begins the clause.
- 113 Questions prefaced with μή (mē) in Greek anticipate a negative answer. This can sometimes be indicated by using a “tag” at the end in English (here the tag is “does he?”).
- 114 Grk “is from the seed” (an idiom for human descent).
- 115 An allusion to Ps 89:4.
- 116 An allusion to Mic 5:2. For location see ; ; ; .
- 117 Grk “the village where David was.”
- 118 Or “among the common people” (as opposed to the religious authorities like the chief priests and Pharisees).
- 119 Grk “him”; the referent (Jesus) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

When they heard these words, some of the people said, “This really is the Prophet.” Others said, “This is the Christ.” But some said, “Is the Christ to come from Galilee? Has not the Scripture said that the Christ comes from the offspring of David, and comes from Bethlehem, the village where David was?” So there was a division among the people over him.

NIVNew International Version (2011)
On hearing his words, some of the people said, “Surely this man is the Prophet.”
Others said, “He is the Messiah.”
Still others asked, “How can the Messiah come from Galilee? Does not Scripture say that the Messiah will come from David’s descendants and from Bethlehem, the town where David lived?” Thus the people were divided because of Jesus.

When the crowds heard him say this, some of them declared, “Surely this man is the Prophet we’ve been expecting.” Others said, “He is the Messiah.” Still others said, “But he can’t be! Will the Messiah come from Galilee? For the Scriptures clearly state that the Messiah will be born of the royal line of David, in Bethlehem, the village where King David was born.” So the crowd was divided about him.

Many of the people therefore, when they heard this saying, said, Of a truth this is the Prophet. Others said, This is the Christ. But some said, Shall Christ come out of Galilee? Hath not the scripture said, That Christ cometh of the seed of David, and out of the town of Beth-lehem, where David was? So there was a division among the people because of him.
