Lazarus Raised from the Dead

11:38Jesus, intensely moved73 again, came to the tomb. (Now it was a cave, and a stone was placed across it.)7411:39Jesus said, “Take away the stone.”75 Martha, the sister of the deceased,76 replied, “Lord, by this time the body will have a bad smell,77 because he has been buried78 four days.”7911:40Jesus responded,80 “Didn’t I tell you that if you believe, you would see the glory of God?” 11:41So they took away81 the stone. Jesus looked upward82 and said, “Father, I thank you that you have listened to me.8311:42I knew that you always listen to me,84 but I said this85 for the sake of the crowd standing around here, that they may believe that you sent me.” 11:43When86 he had said this, he shouted in a loud voice,87 “Lazarus, come out!” 11:44The one who had died came out, his feet and hands tied up with strips of cloth,88 and a cloth wrapped around his face.89 Jesus said to them, “Unwrap him90 and let him go.”

Footnotes

  1. 73 Or (perhaps) “Jesus was deeply indignant.”
  2. 74 This is a parenthetical note by the author.
  3. 75 Or “Remove the stone.”
  4. 76 Grk “the sister of the one who had died.”
  5. 77 Grk “already he stinks.”
  6. 78 Or “been there” (in the tomb—see John 11:17).
  7. 79 He has been buried four days. Although all the details of the miracle itself are not given, those details which are mentioned are important. The statement made by Martha is extremely significant for understanding what actually took place. There is no doubt that Lazarus had really died, because the decomposition of his body had already begun to take place, since he had been dead for four days.
  8. 80 Grk “Jesus said to her.”
  9. 81 Or “they removed.”
  10. 82 Grk “lifted up his eyes above.”
  11. 83 Or “that you have heard me.”
  12. 84 Grk “that you always hear me.”
  13. 85 The word “this” is not in the Greek text. Direct objects in Greek were often omitted when clear from the context.
  14. 86 Grk “And when.”
  15. 87 The purpose of the loud voice was probably to ensure that all in the crowd could hear (compare the purpose of the prayer of thanksgiving in vv. 41–42).
  16. 88 Many have wondered how Lazarus got out of the tomb if his hands and feet were still tied up with strips of cloth. The author does not tell, and with a miracle of this magnitude, this is not an important fact to know. If Lazarus’ decomposing body was brought back to life by the power of God, then it could certainly have been moved out of the tomb by that same power. Others have suggested that the legs were bound separately, which would remove the difficulty, but the account gives no indication of this. What may be of more significance for the author is the comparison which this picture naturally evokes with the resurrection of Jesus, where the graveclothes stayed in the tomb neatly folded (20:6–7). Jesus, unlike Lazarus, would never need graveclothes again.
  17. 89 Grk “and his face tied around with cloth.”
  18. 90 Grk “Loose him.”

ESVEnglish Standard Version

Then Jesus, deeply moved again, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone lay against it. Jesus said, “Take away the stone.” Martha, the sister of the dead man, said to him, “Lord, by this time there will be an odor, for he has been dead four days.” Jesus said to her, “Did I not tell you that if you believed you would see the glory of God?” So they took away the stone. And Jesus lifted up his eyes and said, “Father, I thank you that you have heard me. I knew that you always hear me, but I said this on account of the people standing around, that they may believe that you sent me.” When he had said these things, he cried out with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out.” The man who had died came out, his hands and feet bound with linen strips, and his face wrapped with a cloth. Jesus said to them, “Unbind him, and let him go.”

NIVNew International Version (2011)

Jesus, once more deeply moved, came to the tomb. It was a cave with a stone laid across the entrance. “Take away the stone,” he said.

“But, Lord,” said Martha, the sister of the dead man, “by this time there is a bad odor, for he has been there four days.”

Then Jesus said, “Did I not tell you that if you believe, you will see the glory of God?”

So they took away the stone. Then Jesus looked up and said, “Father, I thank you that you have heard me. I knew that you always hear me, but I said this for the benefit of the people standing here, that they may believe that you sent me.”

When he had said this, Jesus called in a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!” The dead man came out, his hands and feet wrapped with strips of linen, and a cloth around his face.

Jesus said to them, “Take off the grave clothes and let him go.”

CSBChristian Standard Bible

Then Jesus, deeply moved again, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone was lying against it. “Remove the stone,” Jesus said.

Martha, the dead man’s sister, told him, “Lord, there is already a stench because he has been dead four days.”

Jesus said to her, “Didn’t I tell you that if you believed you would see the glory of God?”

So they removed the stone. Then Jesus raised his eyes and said, “Father, I thank you that you heard me. I know that you always hear me, but because of the crowd standing here I said this, so that they may believe you sent me.” After he said this, he shouted with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!” The dead man came out bound hand and foot with linen strips and with his face wrapped in a cloth. Jesus said to them, “Unwrap him and let him go.”

NLTNew Living Translation

Jesus was still angry as he arrived at the tomb, a cave with a stone rolled across its entrance. “Roll the stone aside,” Jesus told them.

But Martha, the dead man’s sister, protested, “Lord, he has been dead for four days. The smell will be terrible.”

Jesus responded, “Didn’t I tell you that you would see God’s glory if you believe?” So they rolled the stone aside. Then Jesus looked up to heaven and said, “Father, thank you for hearing me. You always hear me, but I said it out loud for the sake of all these people standing here, so that they will believe you sent me.” Then Jesus shouted, “Lazarus, come out!” And the dead man came out, his hands and feet bound in graveclothes, his face wrapped in a headcloth. Jesus told them, “Unwrap him and let him go!”

LEBThe Lexham English Bible

Then Jesus, deeply moved within himself again, came to the tomb. Now it was a cave, and a stone was lying on it. Jesus said, “Take away the stone.” Martha, the sister of the one who had died, said to him, “Lord, he is stinking already, because it has been four days.” Jesus said to her, “Did I not say to you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God?” So they took away the stone. And Jesus lifted up his eyes above and said, “Father, I give thanks to you that you hear me. And I know that you always hear me, but for the sake of the crowd standing around I said it, so that they may believe that you sent me.” And when he had said these things, he cried out with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!” The one who had died came out, his feet and his hands bound with strips of cloth, and his face wrapped with a facecloth. Jesus said to them, “Untie him and let him go.”

KJV 1900King James Version

Jesus therefore again groaning in himself cometh to the grave. It was a cave, and a stone lay upon it. Jesus said, Take ye away the stone. Martha, the sister of him that was dead, saith unto him, Lord, by this time he stinketh: for he hath been dead four days. Jesus saith unto her, Said I not unto thee, that, if thou wouldest believe, thou shouldest see the glory of God? Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead was laid. And Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me. And I knew that thou hearest me always: but because of the people which stand by I said it, that they may believe that thou hast sent me. And when he thus had spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth. And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with graveclothes: and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go.
