Footnotes

  1. 37 This verse is very similar to Jer 19:8 where the same judgment is pronounced on Jerusalem. For the meaning of some of the terms here (“hiss out their scorn” and “all the disasters that have happened to it”) see the notes on that verse.

NIVNew International Version (2011)

“Edom will become an object of horror;

no people will dwell in it.

NLTNew Living Translation

“Edom will be an object of horror.

All who pass by will be appalled

“No one will live there;

no one will inhabit it.

LEBThe Lexham English Bible

“And Edom will become as a horror,

everyone who passes by it will be appalled,

and will hiss because of all its blows.

As the overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah

and their neighbors,” says Yahweh,

“no one will live there,

and the son of humankind will not dwell as an alien in it.

KJV 1900King James Version

Also Edom shall be a desolation:

Every one that goeth by it shall be astonished,

And shall hiss at all the plagues thereof.

As in the overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah

And the neighbour cities thereof, saith the Lord,

No man shall abide there,

Neither shall a son of man dwell in it.
