31:20Indeed, the people of Israel are my dear children.
They are the children I take delight in.41
For even though I must often rebuke them,
I still remember them with fondness.
So I am deeply moved with pity for them42
and will surely have compassion on them.
I, the Lord, affirm it!43
Footnotes
- 41 Heb “Is Ephraim a dear son to me or a child of delight?” For the substitution of Israel for Ephraim and the plural pronouns for the singular see the note on v. . According to 210 הֲ 1.c the question is rhetorical having the force of an impassioned affirmation. See 1 Sam 2:27; Job 41:9 (41:1 ) for parallel usage.
- 42 Heb “my stomach churns for him.” The parallelism shows that this refers to pity or compassion.
- 43 Heb “Oracle of the Lord.”

Is Ephraim my dear son?
Is he my darling child?

Isn’t Ephraim a precious son to me,
a delightful child?
Whenever I speak against him,
I certainly still think about him.
Therefore, my inner being yearns for him;
I will truly have compassion on him.
This is the Lord’s declaration.

“Is not Israel still my son,
my darling child?” says the Lord.
“I often have to punish him,

Is Ephraim my dear son,

For as often as I have earnestly spoken against him,
I still remember him.

Is Ephraim my dear son? is he a pleasant child?
For since I spake against him, I do earnestly remember him still:
Therefore my bowels are troubled for him;
I will surely have mercy upon him, saith the Lord.
