The Lord Will Heal the Wounds of Judah

30:12Moreover,26 the Lord says to the people of Zion,27

“Your injuries are incurable;

your wounds are severe.28

30:13There is no one to plead your cause.

There are no remedies for your wounds.29

There is no healing for you.

30:14All your allies have abandoned you.30

They no longer have any concern for you.

For I have attacked you like an enemy would.

I have chastened you cruelly.

For your wickedness is so great

and your sin is so much.31

30:15Why do you complain about your injuries,

that your pain is incurable?

I have done all this to you

because your wickedness is so great

and your sin is so much.

Footnotes

  1. 26 The particle כִּי (ki) here is parallel to the one in v. 5 that introduces the first oracle. See the discussion in the translator’s note there.
  2. 27 The pronouns in vv. 10–17 are second feminine singular referring to a personified entity. That entity is identified in v. 17 as Zion, which here stands for the people of Zion.
  3. 28 The wounds to the body politic are those of the incursions from the enemy from the north referred to in Jer 4:6; 6:1 over which Jeremiah and even God himself have lamented (Jer 8:21; 10:19; 14:17). The enemy from the north has been identified as Babylon and has been identified as the agent of God’s punishment of his disobedient people (Jer 1:15; 4:6; 25:9).
  4. 29 The translation of these first two lines follows the redivision of the lines suggested in and rather than that of the Masoretes who read, “There is no one who pleads your cause with reference to [your] wound.” This verse exhibits a mixed metaphor of an advocate pleading someone’s case (cf., Jer 5:28; 22:18) and of a physician applying medicine to wounds and sores resulting from them (see, e.g., Jer 8:18 for the latter metaphor). Zion’s sins are beyond defense and the wounds inflicted upon her beyond healing. However, God, himself, in his own time will forgive her sins (Jer 31:34; 33:8) and heal her wounds (Jer 30:17).
  5. 30 Heb “forgotten you.”
  6. 31 Heb “attacked you like … with the chastening of a cruel one because of the greatness of your iniquity [and because] your sins are many.” The sentence has been broken down to conform to contemporary English style and better poetic scansion.

ESVEnglish Standard Version

“For thus says the Lord:

Your hurt is incurable,

and your wound is grievous.

There is none to uphold your cause,

no medicine for your wound,

no healing for you.

All your lovers have forgotten you;

they care nothing for you;

for I have dealt you the blow of an enemy,

the punishment of a merciless foe,

because your guilt is great,

because your sins are flagrant.

Why do you cry out over your hurt?

Your pain is incurable.

Because your guilt is great,

because your sins are flagrant,

I have done these things to you.

NIVNew International Version (2011)

“This is what the Lord says:

“ ‘Your wound is incurable,

your injury beyond healing.

There is no one to plead your cause,

no remedy for your sore,

no healing for you.

All your allies have forgotten you;

they care nothing for you.

I have struck you as an enemy would

and punished you as would the cruel,

because your guilt is so great

and your sins so many.

Why do you cry out over your wound,

your pain that has no cure?

Because of your great guilt and many sins

I have done these things to you.

CSBChristian Standard Bible

For this is what the Lord says:

Your injury is incurable;

your wound most severe.

You have no defender for your case.

There is no remedy for your sores,

and no healing for you.

All your lovers have forgotten you;

they no longer look for you,

for I have struck you as an enemy would,

with the discipline of someone cruel,

because of your enormous guilt

and your innumerable sins.

Why do you cry out about your injury?

Your pain has no cure!

I have done these things to you

because of your enormous guilt

and your innumerable sins.

NLTNew Living Translation

This is what the Lord says:

“Your injury is incurable—

a terrible wound.

There is no one to help you

or to bind up your injury.

No medicine can heal you.

All your lovers—your allies—have left you

and do not care about you anymore.

I have wounded you cruelly,

as though I were your enemy.

For your sins are many,

and your guilt is great.

Why do you protest your punishment—

this wound that has no cure?

I have had to punish you

because your sins are many

and your guilt is great.

LEBThe Lexham English Bible

For thus says Yahweh,

‘Your injury is incurable,

your wound is overcome by sickness.

There is no one who pleads your cause,

for your boil there is no healing for you.

All your lovers have forgotten you,

they do not care for you.

I have struck you with the blow of an enemy,

the punishment of the cruel,

because of the greatness of your guilt,

your sins are numerous.

Why do you cry because of your wound?

Your pain is incurable.

Because of the greatness of your guilt—your sins are vast—

I have done these things to you.

KJV 1900King James Version

For thus saith the Lord,

Thy bruise is incurable,

And thy wound is grievous.

There is none to plead thy cause, that thou mayest be bound up:

Thou hast no healing medicines.

All thy lovers have forgotten thee;

They seek thee not;

For I have wounded thee with the wound of an enemy, with the chastisement of a cruel one,

For the multitude of thine iniquity;

Because thy sins were increased.

Why criest thou for thine affliction?

Thy sorrow is incurable for the multitude of thine iniquity:

Because thy sins were increased, I have done these things unto thee.
