2:36Why do you constantly go about
changing your political allegiances?79
You will get no help from Egypt
just as you got no help from Assyria.80
2:37Moreover, you will come away from Egypt
with your hands covering your faces in sorrow and shame81
because the Lord will not allow your reliance on them to be successful
and you will not gain any help from them.82
Footnotes
- 79 Heb “changing your way.” The translation follows the identification of the Hebrew verb here as a defective writing of a form (תֵּזְלִי [tezéli] instead of תֵּאזְלִי [te’zéli]) from a verb meaning “go/go about” (אָזַל [’azal]; cf. 23 אָזַל). Most modern English versions, commentaries, and lexicons read it from a root meaning “to treat cheaply [or lightly]” (תָּזֵלִּי [tazelli] from the root זָלַל (zalal); cf. זָלַל); hence, “Why do you consider it such a small matter to …”
- 80 Heb “You will be ashamed/disappointed by Egypt, just as you were ashamed/ disappointed by Assyria.”
- 81 Heb “with your hands on your head.” For the picture here see 2 Sam 13:19.
- 82 Heb “The Lord has rejected those you trust in; you will not prosper by/from them.”

How much you go about,
changing your way!
You shall be put to shame by Egypt
as you were put to shame by Assyria.
From it too you will come away
with your hands on your head,
for the Lord has rejected those in whom you trust,
and you will not prosper by them.

NIVNew International Version (2011)
Why do you go about so much,
changing your ways?
You will be disappointed by Egypt
as you were by Assyria.
You will also leave that place
with your hands on your head,
for the Lord has rejected those you trust;
you will not be helped by them.

How unstable you are,
constantly changing your ways!
You will be put to shame by Egypt
just as you were put to shame by Assyria.
Moreover, you will be led out from here
with your hands on your head
since the Lord has rejected those you trust;
you will not succeed even with their help.

NLTNew Living Translation
First here, then there—
you flit from one ally to another asking for help.
But your new friends in Egypt will let you down,
just as Assyria did before.
In despair, you will be led into exile
with your hands on your heads,
for the Lord has rejected the nations you trust.
They will not help you at all.

How you go about so much changing your way!
Also by Egypt you will be put to shame,
just as you were put to shame by Assyria.
Also from there you will come out
with your hands on your head,
for Yahweh has rejected those in whom you trust,
and you will not prosper through them.

KJV 1900King James Version
Why gaddest thou about so much to change thy way? thou also shalt be ashamed of Egypt, as thou wast ashamed of Assyria. Yea, thou shalt go forth from him, and thine hands upon thine head: for the Lord hath rejected thy confidences, and thou shalt not prosper in them.
