Footnotes

  1. 8 The words “I said” are not in the Hebrew text, but there appears to be a shift in speaker. Someone is now addressing the Lord. The likely speaker is Jeremiah, so the words “I said” are supplied in the translation for clarity.
  2. 9 The form that introduces this line has raised debate. The form מֵאֵין (me’en) normally means “without” and introduces a qualification of a term expressing desolation or “so that not” and introduces a negative result (cf. 35 II אַיִן 6.b). Neither of these nuances fit either this verse or the occurrence in v. 7. 35 II אַיִן 6.b.γ notes that some have explained this as a strengthened form of אַיִן (’ayin) which occurs in a similar phrase five other times (cf., e.g., 1 Kgs 8:23). Though many including question the validity of this solution it is probably better than the suggestion that gives of repointing to מֵאַיִן (me’ayin, “whence”), which scarcely fits the context of v. 7, or the solution of I אַיִן, which suggests that the ם (mem) is a double writing (dittograph) of the final consonant from the preceding word. That would assume that the scribe made the same error twice or was influenced the second time by the first erroneous writing.
  3. 10 Heb “Great is your name in power.”
  4. 11 Heb “Who should not revere you …?” The question is rhetorical and expects a negative answer.
  5. 12 Heb “For it is fitting to you.”
  6. 13 Heb “their royalty/dominion.” This is a case of substitution of the abstract for the concrete “royalty, royal power” for “kings” who exercise it.
  7. 14 Or “Those wise people and kings are …” It is unclear whether the subject is the “they” of the nations in the preceding verse, or the wise people and kings referred to. The text merely has “they.”
  8. 15 Heb “The instruction of vanities [worthless idols] is wood.” The meaning of this line is a little uncertain. Various proposals have been made to make sense, most of which involve radical emendation of the text. For some examples see J. A. Thompson, Jeremiah (), , fn 6. However, this is probably a case of the bold predication that discussed in §141.d, some examples of which may be seen in Ps 109:4 “I am prayer,” and Ps 120:7 “I am peace.”

ESVEnglish Standard Version

There is none like you, O Lord;

you are great, and your name is great in might.

Who would not fear you, O King of the nations?

For this is your due;

for among all the wise ones of the nations

and in all their kingdoms

there is none like you.

They are both stupid and foolish;

the instruction of idols is but wood!

NIVNew International Version (2011)

No one is like you, Lord;

you are great,

and your name is mighty in power.

Who should not fear you,

King of the nations?

This is your due.

Among all the wise leaders of the nations

and in all their kingdoms,

there is no one like you.

They are all senseless and foolish;

they are taught by worthless wooden idols.

CSBChristian Standard Bible

Lord, there is no one like you.

You are great;

your name is great in power.

Who should not fear you,

King of the nations?

It is what you deserve.

For among all the wise people of the nations

and among all their kingdoms,

there is no one like you.

They are both stupid and foolish,

instructed by worthless idols

made of wood!

NLTNew Living Translation

Lord, there is no one like you!

For you are great, and your name is full of power.

Who would not fear you, O King of nations?

That title belongs to you alone!

Among all the wise people of the earth

and in all the kingdoms of the world,

there is no one like you.

People who worship idols are stupid and foolish.

The things they worship are made of wood!

LEBThe Lexham English Bible

There is none like you, O Yahweh,

you are great and your name is great in might.

Who would not revere you, O king of the nations?

For you it is fitting.

For among all the wise men of the nations,

and in all their kingdoms,

there is none like you.

At the same time they are stupid and foolish,

in the instruction of idols, it is wood.

KJV 1900King James Version

Forasmuch as there is none like unto thee, O Lord;

Thou art great, and thy name is great in might.

Who would not fear thee, O King of nations? for to thee doth it appertain:

Forasmuch as among all the wise men of the nations, and in all their kingdoms, there is none like unto thee.

But they are altogether brutish and foolish:

The stock is a doctrine of vanities.
