with fire and his sword;

the Lord will kill many.30

66:17“As for those who consecrate and ritually purify themselves so they can follow their leader and worship in the sacred orchards,31 those who eat the flesh of pigs and other disgusting creatures, like mice32—they will all be destroyed together,”33 says the Lord.

Footnotes

  1. 27 Chariots are like a windstorm in their swift movement and in the way that they kick up dust.
  2. 28 Heb “to cause to return with the rage of his anger, and his battle cry [or “rebuke”] with flames of fire.”
  3. 29 Heb “flesh” (so , , ); “upon all men”; “all the people of the world.”
  4. 30 Heb “many are the slain of the Lord.”
  5. 31 Heb “the ones who consecrate themselves and the ones who purify themselves toward the orchards [or “gardens”] after the one in the midst.” The precise meaning of the statement is unclear, though it is obvious that some form of idolatry is in view.
  6. 32 Heb “ones who eat the flesh of the pig and the disgusting thing and the mouse.”
  7. 33 Heb “together they will come to an end.”

“Those who sanctify and purify themselves to go into the gardens, following one in the midst, eating pig’s flesh and the abomination and mice, shall come to an end together, declares the Lord.

NIVNew International Version (2011)

See, the Lord is coming with fire,

and his chariots are like a whirlwind;

he will bring down his anger with fury,

and his rebuke with flames of fire.

For with fire and with his sword

the Lord will execute judgment on all people,

and many will be those slain by the Lord.

“Those who consecrate and purify themselves to go into the gardens, following one who is among those who eat the flesh of pigs, rats and other unclean things—they will meet their end together with the one they follow,” declares the Lord.

CSBChristian Standard Bible

Look, the Lord will come with fire—

his chariots are like the whirlwind—

to execute his anger with fury

and his rebuke with flames of fire.

For the Lord will execute judgment

on all humanity with his fiery sword,

and many will be slain by the Lord.

“Those who dedicate and purify themselves to enter the groves following their leader, eating meat from pigs, vermin, and rats, will perish together.”

This is the Lord’s declaration.

NLTNew Living Translation

See, the Lord is coming with fire,

and his swift chariots roar like a whirlwind.

He will bring punishment with the fury of his anger

and the flaming fire of his hot rebuke.

The Lord will punish the world by fire

and by his sword.

He will judge the earth,

and many will be killed by him.

“Those who ‘consecrate’ and ‘purify’ themselves in a sacred garden with its idol in the center—feasting on pork and rats and other detestable meats—will come to a terrible end,” says the Lord.

LEBThe Lexham English Bible

For look! Yahweh will come in fire,

and his chariots like the storm wind,

to give back his anger in wrath,

and his rebuke in flames of fire.

For Yahweh enters into judgment on all flesh with fire and his sword,

and those slain by Yahweh shall be many.

Those who sanctify themselves

and those who cleanse themselves to go into the gardens after the one in the middle,

eating the flesh of swine

and detestable things and rodents together

shall come to an end!” declares Yahweh.

KJV 1900King James Version

For, behold, the Lord will come with fire,

And with his chariots like a whirlwind,

To render his anger with fury,

And his rebuke with flames of fire.

For by fire and by his sword will the Lord plead with all flesh:

And the slain of the Lord shall be many.

They that sanctify themselves, and purify themselves in the gardens

Behind one tree in the midst,

Eating swine’s flesh, and the abomination, and the mouse,

Shall be consumed together, saith the Lord.
