Read in Logos
Isaiah 61:3: to grant to those who mourn in Zion— to give them a beautiful headdress instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, the garment of praise instead of a faint spirit; that they may be called oaks of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that he may be glorified.

Footnotes

  1. 7 Heb “oil of joy” (, ); , , “the oil of gladness.”
  2. 8 Heb “garment of praise.”
  3. 9 Heb “a faint spirit” (so ); , “the spirit of heaviness”; “a spirit of fainting.”
  4. 10 Rather than referring to the character of the people, צֶדֶק (tsedeq) may carry the nuance “vindication” here, suggesting that God’s restored people are a testimony to his justice. See v. 2, which alludes to the fact that God will take vengeance against the enemies of his people. Cf. “oaks of justice.”
  5. 11 Heb “a planting of the Lord to reveal splendor.”
