Footnotes

  1. 9 Heb “How delightful on the mountains.”
  2. 10 Or “has become king.” When a new king was enthroned, his followers would give this shout. For other examples of this enthronement formula (Qal perfect 3rd person masculine singular מָלַךְ [malakh], followed by the name of the king), see 2 Sam 15:10; 1 Kgs 1:11, 13, 18; 2 Kgs 9:13. The Lord is an eternal king, but here he is pictured as a victorious warrior who establishes his rule from Zion.
  3. 11 קוֹל (qol, “voice”) is used at the beginning of the verse as an interjection.
  4. 12 Heb “eye in eye”; , “eye to eye”; “directly, before their eyes.”
  5. 13 Or “redeems.” See the note at .

ESVEnglish Standard Version

How beautiful upon the mountains

are the feet of him who brings good news,

who publishes peace, who brings good news of happiness,

who publishes salvation,

who says to Zion, “Your God reigns.”

The voice of your watchmen—they lift up their voice;

together they sing for joy;

for eye to eye they see

the return of the Lord to Zion.

Break forth together into singing,

you waste places of Jerusalem,

for the Lord has comforted his people;

he has redeemed Jerusalem.

NIVNew International Version (2011)

How beautiful on the mountains

are the feet of those who bring good news,

who proclaim peace,

who bring good tidings,

who proclaim salvation,

who say to Zion,

“Your God reigns!”

Listen! Your watchmen lift up their voices;

together they shout for joy.

When the Lord returns to Zion,

they will see it with their own eyes.

Burst into songs of joy together,

you ruins of Jerusalem,

for the Lord has comforted his people,

he has redeemed Jerusalem.

CSBChristian Standard Bible

How beautiful on the mountains

are the feet of the herald,

who proclaims peace,

who brings news of good things,

who proclaims salvation,

who says to Zion, “Your God reigns!”

The voices of your watchmen—

they lift up their voices,

shouting for joy together;

for every eye will see

when the Lord returns to Zion.

Be joyful, rejoice together,

you ruins of Jerusalem!

For the Lord has comforted his people;

he has redeemed Jerusalem.

NLTNew Living Translation

How beautiful on the mountains

are the feet of the messenger who brings good news,

the good news of peace and salvation,

the news that the God of Israel reigns!

The watchmen shout and sing with joy,

for before their very eyes

they see the Lord returning to Jerusalem.

Let the ruins of Jerusalem break into joyful song,

for the Lord has comforted his people.

He has redeemed Jerusalem.

LEBThe Lexham English Bible

How delightful on the mountains are the feet of him who brings good news,

who announces peace, who brings good news, who announces salvation,

who says to Zion, “Your God reigns as a king.”

The voices of your watchmen! They lift up their voices;

together they sing for joy;

for they clearly see Yahweh’s return to Zion.

Break forth,

sing for joy together, ruins of Jerusalem,

for Yahweh has comforted his people;

he has redeemed Jerusalem.

KJV 1900King James Version

How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him that bringeth good tidings, that publisheth peace;

That bringeth good tidings of good, that publisheth salvation;

That saith unto Zion, Thy God reigneth!

Thy watchmen shall lift up the voice;

With the voice together shall they sing:

For they shall see eye to eye,

When the Lord shall bring again Zion.

Break forth into joy, sing together, ye waste places of Jerusalem:

For the Lord hath comforted his people, he hath redeemed Jerusalem.
