5:5Now I will inform you

what I am about to do to my vineyard:

I will remove its hedge and turn it into pasture,8

I will break its wall and allow animals to graze there.9

5:6I will make it a wasteland;

no one will prune its vines or hoe its ground,10

and thorns and briers will grow there.

I will order the clouds

not to drop any rain on it.

5:7Indeed11 Israel12 is the vineyard of the Lord who commands armies,

the people13 of Judah are the cultivated place in which he took delight.

He waited for justice, but look what he got—disobedience!14

He waited for fairness, but look what he got—cries for help!15

Footnotes

  1. 8 Heb “and it will become [a place for] grazing.” בָּעַר (ba’ar, “grazing”) is a homonym of the more often used verb “to burn.”
  2. 9 Heb “and it will become a trampled place” ( “trampled ground”).
  3. 10 Heb “it will not be pruned or hoed” (so ); and both similar.
  4. 11 Or “For” (, , , ).
  5. 12 Heb “the house of Israel” (so , , ).
  6. 13 Heb “men,” but in a generic sense.
  7. 14 Heb “but, look, disobedience.” The precise meaning of מִשְׂפָּח (mishpakh), which occurs only here in the OT, is uncertain. Some have suggested a meaning “bloodshed.” The term is obviously chosen for its wordplay value; it sounds very much like מִשְׁפָּט (mishpat, “justice”). The sound play draws attention to the point being made; the people have not met the Lord’s expectations.
  8. 15 Heb “but, look, a cry for help.” The verb (“he waited”) does double duty in the parallelism. צְעָקָה (tsa’qah) refers to the cries for help made by the oppressed. It sounds very much like צְדָקָה (tsédaqah, “fairness”). The sound play draws attention to the point being made; the people have not met the Lord’s expectations.

ESVEnglish Standard Version

And now I will tell you

what I will do to my vineyard.

I will remove its hedge,

and it shall be devoured;

I will break down its wall,

and it shall be trampled down.

I will make it a waste;

it shall not be pruned or hoed,

and briers and thorns shall grow up;

I will also command the clouds

that they rain no rain upon it.

For the vineyard of the Lord of hosts

is the house of Israel,

and the men of Judah

are his pleasant planting;

and he looked for justice,

but behold, bloodshed;

for righteousness,

but behold, an outcry!

NIVNew International Version (2011)

Now I will tell you

what I am going to do to my vineyard:

I will take away its hedge,

and it will be destroyed;

I will break down its wall,

and it will be trampled.

I will make it a wasteland,

neither pruned nor cultivated,

and briers and thorns will grow there.

I will command the clouds

not to rain on it.”

The vineyard of the Lord Almighty

is the nation of Israel,

and the people of Judah

are the vines he delighted in.

And he looked for justice, but saw bloodshed;

for righteousness, but heard cries of distress.

CSBChristian Standard Bible

Now I will tell you

what I am about to do to my vineyard:

I will remove its hedge,

and it will be consumed;

I will tear down its wall,

and it will be trampled.

I will make it a wasteland.

It will not be pruned or weeded;

thorns and briers will grow up.

I will also give orders to the clouds

that rain should not fall on it.

For the vineyard of the Lord of Armies

is the house of Israel,

and the men of Judah,

the plant he delighted in.

He expected justice

but saw injustice;

he expected righteousness

but heard cries of despair.

NLTNew Living Translation

Now let me tell you

what I will do to my vineyard:

I will tear down its hedges

and let it be destroyed.

I will break down its walls

and let the animals trample it.

I will make it a wild place

where the vines are not pruned and the ground is not hoed,

a place overgrown with briers and thorns.

I will command the clouds

to drop no rain on it.

The nation of Israel is the vineyard of the Lord of Heaven’s Armies.

The people of Judah are his pleasant garden.

He expected a crop of justice,

but instead he found oppression.

He expected to find righteousness,

but instead he heard cries of violence.

LEBThe Lexham English Bible

And now let me tell you what I myself am about to do to my vineyard.

I will remove its hedge, and it shall become a devastation.

I will break down its wall, and it shall become a trampling.

And I will make it a wasteland;

it shall not be pruned and hoed,

and it shall be overgrown with briers and thornbushes.

And concerning the clouds, I will command them not to send rain down upon it.

For the vineyard of Yahweh of hosts is the house of Israel,

and the man of Judah is the plantation of his delight.

And he waited for justice,

but look! Bloodshed!

For righteousness,

but look! A cry of distress!

KJV 1900King James Version

And now go to; I will tell you what I will do to my vineyard:

I will take away the hedge thereof, and it shall be eaten up;

And break down the wall thereof, and it shall be trodden down:

And I will lay it waste:

It shall not be pruned, nor digged;

But there shall come up briers and thorns:

I will also command the clouds that they rain no rain upon it.

For the vineyard of the Lord of hosts is the house of Israel,

And the men of Judah his pleasant plant:

And he looked for judgment, but behold oppression;

For righteousness, but behold a cry.
