48:14All of you, gather together and listen!
Who among them27 announced these things?
The Lord’s ally28 will carry out his desire against Babylon;
he will exert his power against the Babylonians.29
48:15I, I have spoken—
yes, I have summoned him;
I lead him and he will succeed.30
48:16Approach me! Listen to this!
From the very first I have not spoken in secret;
when it happens,31 I am there.”
So now, the sovereign Lord has sent me, accompanied by his spirit.32
Footnotes
- 27 This probably refers to the idol gods (see v. 5).
- 28 Or “friend,” or “covenant partner.” The Lord’s ally is a reference to Cyrus.
- 29 Heb “and his arm [against] the Babylonians.”
- 30 Heb “and his way will be prosperous.”
- 31 Heb “from the time of its occurring.”
- 32 The speaker here is not identified specifically, but he is probably Cyrus, the Lord’s “ally” mentioned in vv. 14–15.

“Assemble, all of you, and listen!
Who among them has declared these things?
The Lord loves him;
he shall perform his purpose on Babylon,
and his arm shall be against the Chaldeans.
I, even I, have spoken and called him;
I have brought him, and he will prosper in his way.
Draw near to me, hear this:
from the beginning I have not spoken in secret,
from the time it came to be I have been there.”
And now the Lord God has sent me, and his Spirit.

All of you, assemble and listen!
Who among the idols has declared these things?
The Lord loves him;

I—I have spoken;
yes, I have called him;
I have brought him,

From the beginning I have not spoken in secret;

Have any of your idols ever told you this?
Come, all of you, and listen:
The Lord has chosen Cyrus as his ally.
He will use him to put an end to the empire of Babylon
and to destroy the Babylonian armies.
“I have said it: I am calling Cyrus!
I will send him on this errand and will help him succeed.
Come closer, and listen to this.
From the beginning I have told you plainly what would happen.”
And now the Sovereign Lord and his Spirit
have sent me with this message.

Assemble, all of you, and hear!
Who among them declared these things?
Yahweh loves him;
he shall perform his wish against Babylon
and his arm against the Chaldeans.
I, I myself, I have spoken!
Indeed, I have called him.
I have brought him,
and he will be successful in his way.
Draw near to me; hear this! I have not spoken in secrecy from the beginning;
from the time it came to be, there I have been;
And now the Lord Yahweh has sent me and his Spirit.”

All ye, assemble yourselves, and hear;
Which among them hath declared these things?
The Lord hath loved him:
He will do his pleasure on Babylon,
And his arm shall be on the Chaldeans.
I, even I, have spoken; yea, I have called him:
I have brought him, and he shall make his way prosperous.
Come ye near unto me, hear ye this;
I have not spoken in secret from the beginning;
From the time that it was, there am I:
And now the Lord God, and his Spirit, hath sent me.
