47:7You said,
‘I will rule forever as permanent queen!’10
You did not think about these things;11
you did not consider how it would turn out.12
47:8So now, listen to this,
O one who lives so lavishly,13
who lives securely,
who says to herself,14
‘I am unique! No one can compare to me!15
I will never have to live as a widow;
I will never lose my children.’16
47:9Both of these will come upon you
suddenly, in one day!
You will lose your children and be widowed.17
You will be overwhelmed by these tragedies,18
despite19 your many incantations
and your numerous amulets.20

- 11 Heb “you did not set these things upon your heart [or “mind”].”
- 12 Heb “you did not remember its outcome”; “you disregarded their outcome.”
- 13 Or perhaps, “voluptuous one” (); “you sensual one”; “You are a pleasure-crazy kingdom.”
- 14 Heb “the one who says in her heart.”
- 15 Heb “I [am], and besides me there is no other.” See Zeph 2:15.
- 16 Heb “I will not live [as] a widow, and I will not know loss of children.”
- 17 Heb “loss of children and widowhood.” In the Hebrew text the phrase is in apposition to “both of these” in line 1.
- 18 Heb “according to their fullness, they will come upon you.”
- 19 For other examples of the preposition bet (בְּ) having the sense of “although, despite,” see 90 III.7.
- 20 Reference is made to incantations and amulets, both of which were important in Mesopotamian religion. They were used to ward off danger and demons.

You said, “I shall be mistress forever,”
so that you did not lay these things to heart
or remember their end.
Now therefore hear this, you lover of pleasures,
who sit securely,
who say in your heart,
“I am, and there is no one besides me;
I shall not sit as a widow
or know the loss of children”:
These two things shall come to you
in a moment, in one day;
the loss of children and widowhood
shall come upon you in full measure,
in spite of your many sorceries
and the great power of your enchantments.

NIVNew International Version (2011)
You said, ‘I am forever—
the eternal queen!’
But you did not consider these things
or reflect on what might happen.
“Now then, listen, you lover of pleasure,
lounging in your security
and saying to yourself,
‘I am, and there is none besides me.
I will never be a widow
or suffer the loss of children.’
Both of these will overtake you
in a moment, on a single day:
loss of children and widowhood.
They will come upon you in full measure,
in spite of your many sorceries
and all your potent spells.

‘I am, and there is no one else.
I will never be a widow

You said, ‘I will reign forever as queen of the world!’
You did not reflect on your actions
or think about their consequences.
“Listen to this, you pleasure-loving kingdom,
living at ease and feeling secure.
You say, ‘I am the only one, and there is no other.
I will never be a widow or lose my children.’
Well, both these things will come upon you in a moment:
widowhood and the loss of your children.
Yes, these calamities will come upon you,
despite all your witchcraft and magic.

KJV 1900King James Version
And thou saidst, I shall be a lady for ever:
So that thou didst not lay these things to thy heart,
Neither didst remember the latter end of it.
Therefore hear now this, thou that art given to pleasures, that dwellest carelessly,
That sayest in thine heart, I am, and none else beside me;
I shall not sit as a widow, neither shall I know the loss of children:
But these two things shall come to thee in a moment in one day,
The loss of children, and widowhood:
They shall come upon thee in their perfection
For the multitude of thy sorceries, and for the great abundance of thine enchantments.
