45:1This is what the Lord says to his chosen1 one,

to Cyrus, whose right hand I hold2

in order to subdue nations before him,

and disarm kings,3

to open doors before him,

so gates remain unclosed:

45:2“I will go before you

and level mountains.4

Bronze doors I will shatter

and iron bars5 I will hack through.

Footnotes

  1. 1 Heb “anointed” (so , , , , ); “his appointed king.”
  2. 2 The “right hand” is a symbol of activity and strength; the Lord directs Cyrus’ activities and assures his success.
  3. 3 Heb “and the belts of kings I will loosen”; “strip kings of their robes”; “strip kings of their armor.”
  4. 4 The form הֲדוּרִים (hadurim) makes little, if any, sense here. It is probably a corruption of an original הָרָרִים (hararim, “mountains”), the reduplicated form of הָר (har, “mountain”).
  5. 5 That is, on the gates. Cf. “break the iron bars on bronze gates.”

whose right hand he will empower.

Before him, mighty kings will be paralyzed with fear.

Their fortress gates will be opened,

never to shut again.

“I will go before you, Cyrus,

and level the mountains.

I will smash down gates of bronze

and cut through bars of iron.

to Cyrus, whose right hand I have grasped

to subjugate nations before him,

and I uncover the loins of kings

to open doors before him,

and the gates shall not be shut:

“I myself will go before you,

I will break the doors of bronze

and cut through the bars of iron.

KJV 1900King James Version

Thus saith the Lord to his anointed, to Cyrus,

And the gates shall not be shut;

I will go before thee,

And make the crooked places straight:

I will break in pieces the gates of brass,

And cut in sunder the bars of iron:
