The Lord Rebukes His People

43:22“But you did not call for me, O Jacob;

you did not long24 for me, O Israel.

43:23You did not bring me lambs for your burnt offerings;

you did not honor me with your sacrifices.

I did not burden you with offerings;

I did not make you weary by demanding25 incense.

43:24You did not buy me aromatic reeds;26

you did not present to me27 the fat of your sacrifices.

Yet you burdened me with your sins;

you made me weary with your evil deeds.28

Footnotes

  1. 24 Or “strive”; , , “been weary of me.”
  2. 25 Heb “with.” The words “by demanding” are supplied in the translation for clarification.
  3. 26 That is, “calamus” (so ); , , “incense”; “spices.”
  4. 27 Heb “you did not saturate me”; “Neither have you filled Me.”
  5. 28 In vv. 22–24 the Lord appears to be condemning his people for failure to bring the proper sacrifices. However, this is problematic. If this refers to the nation’s behavior while in exile, such cultic service was impossible and could hardly be expected by the Lord. If this refers to the nation’s conduct before the exile, it contradicts other passages that depict Israel as bringing excessive sacrifices (see, e.g., Isa 1:11–14; Jer 6:20; Amos 4:4–5, 5:21–23). Rather than being a condemnation of Israel’s failure to bring sacrifices, these verses are better taken as a highly rhetorical comment on the worthlessness of Israel’s religious ritual. They may have brought sacrifices, but not to the Lord, for he did not accept them or even want them. See C. R. North, Second Isaiah, 127, and R. Whybray, Isaiah 40–66 (), 91.

“Yet you did not call upon me, O Jacob;

but you have been weary of me, O Israel!

You have not brought me your sheep for burnt offerings,

or honored me with your sacrifices.

I have not burdened you with offerings,

or wearied you with frankincense.

You have not bought me sweet cane with money,

or satisfied me with the fat of your sacrifices.

But you have burdened me with your sins;

you have wearied me with your iniquities.

NIVNew International Version (2011)

“Yet you have not called on me, Jacob,

you have not wearied yourselves for me, Israel.

You have not brought me sheep for burnt offerings,

nor honored me with your sacrifices.

I have not burdened you with grain offerings

nor wearied you with demands for incense.

You have not bought any fragrant calamus for me,

or lavished on me the fat of your sacrifices.

But you have burdened me with your sins

and wearied me with your offenses.

CSBChristian Standard Bible

“But, Jacob, you have not called on me,

because, Israel, you have become weary of me.

You have not brought me your sheep for burnt offerings

or honored me with your sacrifices.

I have not burdened you with offerings

or wearied you with incense.

You have not bought me aromatic cane with silver,

or satisfied me with the fat of your sacrifices.

But you have burdened me with your sins;

you have wearied me with your iniquities.

NLTNew Living Translation

“But, dear family of Jacob, you refuse to ask for my help.

You have grown tired of me, O Israel!

You have not brought me sheep or goats for burnt offerings.

You have not honored me with sacrifices,

though I have not burdened and wearied you

with requests for grain offerings and frankincense.

You have not brought me fragrant calamus

or pleased me with the fat from sacrifices.

Instead, you have burdened me with your sins

and wearied me with your faults.

LEBThe Lexham English Bible

But you did not call me, Jacob;

for you have become weary of me, Israel.

You have not brought me your sheep for a burnt offering

nor honored me with your sacrifice.

I have not made you serve with offerings,

nor have I made you weary with frankincense.

You have not bought me spice reed with money

or satisfied me with the fat of sacrifices.

But you have burdened me with your sins;

you have made me weary with your iniquities.

KJV 1900King James Version

But thou hast not called upon me, O Jacob;

But thou hast been weary of me, O Israel.

Thou hast not brought me the small cattle of thy burnt offerings;

Neither hast thou honoured me with thy sacrifices.

I have not caused thee to serve with an offering,

Nor wearied thee with incense.

Thou hast bought me no sweet cane with money,

Neither hast thou filled me with the fat of thy sacrifices:

But thou hast made me to serve with thy sins,

Thou hast wearied me with thine iniquities.
