Footnotes

  1. 36 Heb “and lifted your eyes on high?” Cf. “lifted your eyes in pride”; “haughtily lifted your eyes.”
  2. 37 See the note on the phrase “the Holy One of Israel” in .
  3. 38 The Hebrew term translated “sovereign master” here is אֲדֹנָי (’adonay).
  4. 39 Heb “the height of its extremity”; “its farthest height.”
  5. 40 The Hebrew text has simply, “I dug and drank water.” But the parallel text in 2 Kgs 19:24 has “foreign waters.” זָרִים (zarim, “foreign”) may have accidentally dropped out of the Isaianic text by homoioteleuton (cf. , , ). Note that the preceding word, מַיִם (mayim, “water) also ends in mem (ם). The Qumran scroll 1QIsaa has “foreign waters” for this line. However, in several other passages the 1QIsaa scroll harmonizes with 2 Kgs 19 against the (Isa 36:5; 37:9, 20). Since the addition of “foreign” to this text in Isaiah by a later scribe would be more likely than its deletion, the reading should be accepted.

“ ‘Whom have you mocked and reviled?

Against whom have you raised your voice

and lifted your eyes to the heights?

Against the Holy One of Israel!

By your servants you have mocked the Lord,

and you have said, With my many chariots

I have gone up the heights of the mountains,

to the far recesses of Lebanon,

to cut down its tallest cedars,

its choicest cypresses,

to come to its remotest height,

its most fruitful forest.

I dug wells

and drank waters,

to dry up with the sole of my foot

all the streams of Egypt.

NIVNew International Version (2011)

Who is it you have ridiculed and blasphemed?

Against whom have you raised your voice

and lifted your eyes in pride?

Against the Holy One of Israel!

By your messengers

you have ridiculed the Lord.

And you have said,

‘With my many chariots

I have ascended the heights of the mountains,

the utmost heights of Lebanon.

I have cut down its tallest cedars,

the choicest of its junipers.

I have reached its remotest heights,

the finest of its forests.

I have dug wells in foreign lands

and drunk the water there.

With the soles of my feet

I have dried up all the streams of Egypt.’

CSBChristian Standard Bible

Who is it you have mocked and blasphemed?

Against whom have you raised your voice

and lifted your eyes in pride?

Against the Holy One of Israel!

You have mocked the Lord through your servants.

You have said, “With my many chariots

I have gone up to the heights of the mountains,

to the far recesses of Lebanon.

I cut down its tallest cedars,

its choice cypress trees.

I came to its distant heights,

its densest forest.

I dug wells and drank water in foreign lands.

I dried up all the streams of Egypt

with the soles of my feet.”

NLTNew Living Translation

“Whom have you been defying and ridiculing?

Against whom did you raise your voice?

At whom did you look with such haughty eyes?

It was the Holy One of Israel!

By your messengers you have defied the Lord.

You have said, ‘With my many chariots

I have conquered the highest mountains—

yes, the remotest peaks of Lebanon.

I have cut down its tallest cedars

and its finest cypress trees.

I have reached its farthest heights

and explored its deepest forests.

I have dug wells in many foreign lands

and refreshed myself with their water.

With the sole of my foot,

I stopped up all the rivers of Egypt!’

LEBThe Lexham English Bible

Whom have you taunted and blasphemed,

and against whom have you raised up your voice and lifted your eyes upward?

To the holy one of Israel!

By the hand of your servants you have taunted the Lord,

and you have said, “With my many chariots,

I myself have gone up the height of the mountains,

to the remote areas of Lebanon.

And I cut off its tall cedars,

the choicest of its junipers.

And I came to the height of its limit,

the forest of its orchard.

I myself dug and drank waters,

and I caused all the streams of Egypt to dry up by the sole of my feet.”

KJV 1900King James Version

Whom hast thou reproached and blasphemed?

And against whom hast thou exalted thy voice,

And lifted up thine eyes on high?

Even against the Holy One of Israel.

By thy servants hast thou reproached the Lord, and hast said,

By the multitude of my chariots am I come up

To the height of the mountains, to the sides of Lebanon;

And I will cut down the tall cedars thereof, and the choice fir trees thereof:

And I will enter into the height of his border, and the forest of his Carmel.

I have digged, and drunk water;

And with the sole of my feet have I dried up all the rivers of the besieged places.
