Footnotes
- 29 The words “will grow” are supplied in the translation for stylistic reasons.
- 30 Heb “and she will be a settlement for wild dogs, a dwelling place for ostriches.” The translation assumes an emendation of חָצִיר (khatsir, “grass”) to חָצֵר (khatser, “settlement”). One of the Qumran scrolls of Isaiah (1QIsaa) supports this emendation (cf. II חָצִיר)
- 31 Heb “will meet” (so ); “will mingle there.”
- 32 Heb “and a goat will call to its neighbor.”
- 33 The precise meaning of לִּילִית (lilit) is unclear, though in this context the word certainly refers to some type of wild animal or bird. The word appears to be related to לַיְלָה (laylah, “night”). Some interpret it as the name of a female night demon, on the basis of an apparent Akkadian cognate used as the name of a demon. Later Jewish legends also identified Lilith as a demon. Cf. “Lilith.”
- 34 Heb “and will find for themselves a resting place.”

Thorns shall grow over its strongholds,
nettles and thistles in its fortresses.
It shall be the haunt of jackals,
an abode for ostriches.
And wild animals shall meet with hyenas;
the wild goat shall cry to his fellow;
indeed, there the night bird settles
and finds for herself a resting place.

Thorns will overrun her citadels,

and find for themselves places of rest.

Thorns will overrun its palaces;
nettles and thistles will grow in its forts.
The ruins will become a haunt for jackals
and a home for owls.
Desert animals will mingle there with hyenas,
their howls filling the night.
Wild goats will bleat at one another among the ruins,
and night creatures will come there to rest.

And thorns shall go up her citadel fortress,
weeds and thistle plants in her fortresses;
and it shall be the settlement of jackals,
green grass for the daughters of an ostrich.
And desert creatures shall meet with hyenas,
and a goat-demon shall call to his neighbor;
surely there Lilith shall repose,
and she shall find a resting place for herself.

And thorns shall come up in her palaces,
Nettles and brambles in the fortresses thereof:
And it shall be an habitation of dragons,
And a court for owls.
The wild beasts of the desert shall also meet with the wild beasts of the island,
And the satyr shall cry to his fellow;
The screech owl also shall rest there,
And find for herself a place of rest.
