31:8Assyria will fall by a sword, but not one human-made;22
a sword not made by humankind will destroy them.23
They will run away from this sword24
and their young men will be forced to do hard labor.
31:9They will surrender their stronghold25 because of fear;26
their officers will be afraid of the Lord’s battle flag.”27
This is what the Lord says—
the one whose fire is in Zion,
whose firepot is in Jerusalem.28
Footnotes
- 22 Heb “Assyria will fall by a sword, not of a man.”
- 23 Heb “and a sword not of humankind will devour him.”
- 24 Heb “he will flee for himself from before a sword.”
- 25 Heb “rocky cliff” (cf. , “rock”), viewed metaphorically as a place of defense and security.
- 26 Heb “His rocky cliff, because of fear, will pass away [i.e., “perish”].”
- 27 Heb “and they will be afraid of the flag, his officers.”
- 28 The “fire” and “firepot” here symbolize divine judgment, which is heating up like a fire in Jerusalem, waiting to be used against the Assyrians when they attack the city.

“Assyria will fall by no human sword;
a sword, not of mortals, will devour them.
They will flee before the sword
and their young men will be put to forced labor.
Their stronghold will fall because of terror;
at the sight of the battle standard their commanders will panic,”
declares the Lord,
whose fire is in Zion,
whose furnace is in Jerusalem.

Then Assyria will fall,
but not by human sword;
a sword will devour him,
but not one made by man.
He will flee from the sword;
his young men will be put to forced labor.
His rock will pass away because of fear,
and his officers will be afraid because of the signal flag.
This is the Lord’s declaration—whose fire is in Zion and whose furnace is in Jerusalem.

NLTNew Living Translation
“The Assyrians will be destroyed,
but not by the swords of men.
The sword of God will strike them,
and they will panic and flee.
The strong young Assyrians
will be taken away as captives.
Even the strongest will quake with terror,
and princes will flee when they see your battle flags,”
says the Lord, whose fire burns in Zion,
whose flame blazes from Jerusalem.

KJV 1900King James Version
Then shall the Assyrian fall with the sword, not of a mighty man;
And the sword, not of a mean man, shall devour him:
But he shall flee from the sword,
And his young men shall be discomfited.
And he shall pass over to his strong hold for fear,
And his princes shall be afraid of the ensign,
Saith the Lord, whose fire is in Zion,
And his furnace in Jerusalem.
