Footnotes

  1. 71 Heb “Indeed by the voice of the Lord Assyria will be shattered.”
  2. 72 The Hebrew text has “every blow from a founded [i.e., “appointed”?] cudgel.” The translation above, with support from a few medieval Hebrew , assumes an emendation of מוּסָדָה (musadah, “founded”) to מוּסָרֹה (musaroh, “his discipline”).
  3. 73 Heb “which the Lord lays on him.”
  4. 74 Heb “will be with” ( similar).
  5. 75 The Hebrew text reads literally, “and with battles of brandishing [weapons?] he will fight against him.” Some prefer to emend וּבְמִלְחֲמוֹת (uvémilkhamot, “and with battles of”) to וּבִמְחֹלוֹת (uvimkholot, “and with dancing”). Note the immediately preceding references to musical instruments.
  6. 76 Or “indeed.”
  7. 77 The Hebrew text reads literally, “for arranged from before [or “yesterday”] is [?].” The meaning of תָּפְתֶּה (taféteh), which occurs only here, is unknown. The translation above (as with most English versions) assumes an emendation to תֹּפֶת (tofet, “Topheth”; cf. , , ) and places the final hey (ה) on the beginning of the next word as an interrogative particle. Topheth was a place near Jerusalem used as a burial ground (see Jer 7:32; 19:11).
  8. 78 The Hebrew text reads literally, “Also it is made ready for the king, one makes it deep and wide.” If one takes the final hey (ה) on תָּפְתֶּה (taféteh) and prefixes it to גָּם (gam) as an interrogative particle (see the preceding note), one can translate, “Is it also made ready for the king?” In this case the question is rhetorical and expects an emphatic affirmative answer, “Of course it is!”
  9. 79 Heb “its pile of wood, fire and wood one makes abundant.” Apparently this alludes to some type of funeral rite.

ESVEnglish Standard Version

The Assyrians will be terror-stricken at the voice of the Lord, when he strikes with his rod. And every stroke of the appointed staff that the Lord lays on them will be to the sound of tambourines and lyres. Battling with brandished arm, he will fight with them. For a burning place has long been prepared; indeed, for the king it is made ready, its pyre made deep and wide, with fire and wood in abundance; the breath of the Lord, like a stream of sulfur, kindles it.

NIVNew International Version (2011)

The voice of the Lord will shatter Assyria;

with his rod he will strike them down.

Every stroke the Lord lays on them

with his punishing club

will be to the music of timbrels and harps,

as he fights them in battle with the blows of his arm.

Topheth has long been prepared;

it has been made ready for the king.

Its fire pit has been made deep and wide,

with an abundance of fire and wood;

the breath of the Lord,

like a stream of burning sulfur,

sets it ablaze.

CSBChristian Standard Bible

Assyria will be shattered by the voice of the Lord.

He will strike with a rod.

And every stroke of the appointed staff

that the Lord brings down on him

will be to the sound of tambourines and lyres;

he will fight against him with brandished weapons.

Indeed! Topheth has been ready

for the king for a long time.

Its funeral pyre is deep and wide,

with plenty of fire and wood.

The breath of the Lord, like a torrent of burning sulfur,

kindles it.

NLTNew Living Translation

At the Lord’s command, the Assyrians will be shattered.

He will strike them down with his royal scepter.

And as the Lord strikes them with his rod of punishment,

his people will celebrate with tambourines and harps.

Lifting his mighty arm, he will fight the Assyrians.

Topheth—the place of burning—

has long been ready for the Assyrian king;

the pyre is piled high with wood.

The breath of the Lord, like fire from a volcano,

will set it ablaze.

LEBThe Lexham English Bible

Indeed, Assyria will be shattered by the voice of Yahweh;

he strikes with the rod.

And every stroke of the staff of foundation that Yahweh lays will be on it with timbrels and lyres,

and he will fight against it with battles of brandishing.

For Topheth has been prepared from yesterday;

indeed, it is made ready for the king.

He makes its pile of wood deep and wide;

he makes fire and wood abundant.

The breath of Yahweh burns in it like a stream of sulfur.

KJV 1900King James Version

For through the voice of the Lord shall the Assyrian be beaten down,

Which smote with a rod.

And in every place where the grounded staff shall pass,

Which the Lord shall lay upon him,

It shall be with tabrets and harps:

And in battles of shaking will he fight with it.

For Tophet is ordained of old;

Yea, for the king it is prepared;

He hath made it deep and large:

The pile thereof is fire and much wood;

The breath of the Lord, like a stream of brimstone, doth kindle it.
