Egypt Will Prove Unreliable
30:1“The rebellious1 children are as good as dead,”2 says the Lord,
“those who make plans without consulting me,3
who form alliances without consulting my Spirit,4
and thereby compound their sin.5
30:2They travel down to Egypt
without seeking my will,6
seeking Pharaoh’s protection,
and looking for safety in Egypt’s protective shade.7
30:3But Pharaoh’s protection will bring you nothing but shame,
and the safety of Egypt’s protective shade nothing but humiliation.
Footnotes
- 1 Or “stubborn” (); cf. “obstinate.”
- 2 Heb “Woe [to] rebellious children.”
- 3 Heb “making a plan, but not from me.”
- 4 Heb “and pouring out a libation, but not [from] my spirit.” This translation assumes that the verb נָסַךְ (nasakh) means “pour out,” and that the cognate noun מַסֵּכָה (massekhah) means “libation.” In this case “pouring out a libation” alludes to a ceremony that formally ratifies an alliance. Another option is to understand the verb נָסַךְ as a homonym meaning “weave,” and the cognate noun מַסֵּכָה as a homonym meaning “covering.” In this case forming an alliance is likened to weaving a garment.
- 5 Heb “consequently adding sin to sin.”
- 6 Heb “those who go to descend to Egypt, but [of] my mouth they do not inquire.”
- 7 Heb “to seek protection in the protection of Pharaoh, and to seek refuge in the shade of Egypt.”

ESVEnglish Standard Version
“Ah, stubborn children,” declares the Lord,
“who carry out a plan, but not mine,
and who make an alliance, but not of my Spirit,
that they may add sin to sin;
who set out to go down to Egypt,
without asking for my direction,
to take refuge in the protection of Pharaoh
and to seek shelter in the shadow of Egypt!
Therefore shall the protection of Pharaoh turn to your shame,
and the shelter in the shadow of Egypt to your humiliation.

NIVNew International Version (2011)
“Woe to the obstinate children,”
declares the Lord,
“to those who carry out plans that are not mine,
forming an alliance, but not by my Spirit,
heaping sin upon sin;
who go down to Egypt
without consulting me;
who look for help to Pharaoh’s protection,
to Egypt’s shade for refuge.
But Pharaoh’s protection will be to your shame,
Egypt’s shade will bring you disgrace.

CSBChristian Standard Bible
Woe to the rebellious children!
This is the Lord’s declaration.
They carry out a plan, but not mine;
they make an alliance,
but against my will,
piling sin on top of sin.
Without asking my advice
they set out to go down to Egypt
in order to seek shelter under Pharaoh’s protection
and take refuge in Egypt’s shadow.
But Pharaoh’s protection will become your shame,
and refuge in Egypt’s shadow your humiliation.

NLTNew Living Translation
“What sorrow awaits my rebellious children,”
says the Lord.
“You make plans that are contrary to mine.
You make alliances not directed by my Spirit,
thus piling up your sins.
For without consulting me,
you have gone down to Egypt for help.
You have put your trust in Pharaoh’s protection.
You have tried to hide in his shade.
But by trusting Pharaoh, you will be humiliated,
and by depending on him, you will be disgraced.

“Oh rebellious children!” declares Yahweh,
“to make a plan, but not from me,
and pour out a libation, but not from my Spirit,
so as to add sin to sin.
Who go to go down to Egypt,
but they do not ask of my mouth,
to take refuge in the protection of Pharaoh
and to take refuge in the shadow of Egypt.
And the protection of Pharaoh shall be shame to you,
and the refuge in the shadow of Egypt, humiliation.

KJV 1900King James Version
Woe to the rebellious children, saith the Lord,
That take counsel, but not of me;
And that cover with a covering, but not of my spirit,
That they may add sin to sin:
That walk to go down into Egypt,
And have not asked at my mouth;
To strengthen themselves in the strength of Pharaoh,
And to trust in the shadow of Egypt!
Therefore shall the strength of Pharaoh be your shame,
And the trust in the shadow of Egypt your confusion.
