Footnotes

  1. 32 Heb “and it will be in that day.” The verb that introduces this verse serves as a discourse particle and is untranslated; see note on “in the future” in .
  2. 33 Heb “the Lord will beat out.” The verb is used of beating seeds or grain to separate the husk from the kernel (see Judg 6:11; Ruth 2:17; Isa 28:27), and of beating the olives off the olive tree (Deut 24:20). The latter metaphor may be in view here, where a tree metaphor has been employed in the preceding verses. See also 17:6.
  3. 34 Heb “the river,” a frequent designation in the OT for the Euphrates. For clarity most modern English versions substitute the name “Euphrates” for “the river” here.
  4. 35 The Israelites will be freed from exile (likened to beating the olives off the tree) and then gathered (likened to collecting the olives).
  5. 36 Heb “and it will be in that day.” The verb that introduces this verse serves as a discourse particle and is untranslated; see note on “in the future” in .
  6. 37 Traditionally, “great” (, , , , ); “loud.”
  7. 38 Or “the ones perishing.”
  8. 39 Or “the ones driven into.”

ESVEnglish Standard Version

In that day from the river Euphrates to the Brook of Egypt the Lord will thresh out the grain, and you will be gleaned one by one, O people of Israel. And in that day a great trumpet will be blown, and those who were lost in the land of Assyria and those who were driven out to the land of Egypt will come and worship the Lord on the holy mountain at Jerusalem.

NIVNew International Version (2011)

In that day the Lord will thresh from the flowing Euphrates to the Wadi of Egypt, and you, Israel, will be gathered up one by one. And in that day a great trumpet will sound. Those who were perishing in Assyria and those who were exiled in Egypt will come and worship the Lord on the holy mountain in Jerusalem.

CSBChristian Standard Bible

On that day

the Lord will thresh grain from the Euphrates River

as far as the Wadi of Egypt,

and you Israelites will be gathered one by one.

On that day

a great trumpet will be blown,

and those lost in the land of Assyria will come,

as well as those dispersed in the land of Egypt;

and they will worship the Lord

at Jerusalem on the holy mountain.

NLTNew Living Translation

Yet the time will come when the Lord will gather them together like handpicked grain. One by one he will gather them—from the Euphrates River in the east to the Brook of Egypt in the west. In that day the great trumpet will sound. Many who were dying in exile in Assyria and Egypt will return to Jerusalem to worship the Lord on his holy mountain.

LEBThe Lexham English Bible

And this shall happen:

on that day, Yahweh will thresh from the floodwaters of the Euphrates to the wadi of Egypt, and as for you, you will be gathered one by one, sons of Israel.

And this shall happen:

on that day, a great trumpet will be blown,

and those who were lost in the land of Assyria will come,

and those who were scattered in the land of Egypt,

and they will bow down to Yahweh on the holy mountain at Jerusalem.

KJV 1900King James Version

And it shall come to pass in that day,

That the Lord shall beat off from the channel of the river unto the stream of Egypt,

And ye shall be gathered one by one, O ye children of Israel.

And it shall come to pass in that day,

That the great trumpet shall be blown,

And they shall come which were ready to perish in the land of Assyria,

And the outcasts in the land of Egypt,

And shall worship the Lord in the holy mount at Jerusalem.
