25:6The Lord who commands armies will hold a banquet for all the nations on this mountain.14

At this banquet there will be plenty of meat and aged wine—

tender meat and choicest wine.15

25:7On this mountain he will swallow up

the shroud that is over all the peoples,16

the woven covering that is over all the nations;17

25:8he will swallow up death permanently.18

The sovereign Lord will wipe away the tears from every face,

and remove his people’s disgrace from all the earth.

Indeed, the Lord has announced it!19

25:9At that time they will say,20

“Look, here21 is our God!

We waited for him and he delivered us.

Here22 is the Lord! We waited for him.

Let’s rejoice and celebrate his deliverance!”

25:10For the Lord’s power will make this mountain secure.23

Moab will be trampled down where it stands,24

as a heap of straw is trampled down in25 a manure pile.

Read in Logos
Isaiah 25:6: On this mountain the LORD of hosts will make for all peoples a feast of rich food, a feast of well-aged wine, of rich food full of marrow, of aged wine well refined.

Footnotes

  1. 14 That is, Mount Zion (see 24:23); cf. ; “In Jerusalem.”
  2. 15 Heb “And the Lord who commands armies [traditionally, the Lord of hosts] will make for all the nations on this mountain a banquet of meats, a banquet of wine dregs, meats filled with marrow, dregs that are filtered.”
  3. 16 The Hebrew text reads, “the face of the shroud, the shroud over all the nations.” Some emend the second הַלּוֹט (hallot) to a passive participle הַלּוּט (hallut, “that is wrapped”).
  4. 17 The point of the imagery is unclear. Perhaps the shroud/covering referred to was associated with death in some way (see v. 8).
  5. 18 The image of the Lord “swallowing” death would be especially powerful, for death was viewed in Canaanite mythology and culture as a hungry enemy that swallows its victims. See the note at .
  6. 19 Heb “has spoken” (so , , , , ).
  7. 20 Heb “and one will say in that day.”
  8. 21 Heb “this [one].”
  9. 22 Heb “this [one].”
  10. 23 Heb “for the hand of the Lord will rest on this mountain”; “will protect Mount Zion”; “will protect (rest on ) Jerusalem.”
  11. 24 Heb “under him,” i.e., “in his place.”
  12. 25 The marginal reading (Qere) is בְּמוֹ (bémo, “in”). The consonantal text (Kethib) has בְּמִי (bémi, “in the water of”).

ESVEnglish Standard Version

On this mountain the Lord of hosts will make for all peoples

a feast of rich food, a feast of well-aged wine,

of rich food full of marrow, of aged wine well refined.

And he will swallow up on this mountain

the covering that is cast over all peoples,

the veil that is spread over all nations.

He will swallow up death forever;

and the Lord God will wipe away tears from all faces,

and the reproach of his people he will take away from all the earth,

for the Lord has spoken.

It will be said on that day,

“Behold, this is our God; we have waited for him, that he might save us.

This is the Lord; we have waited for him;

let us be glad and rejoice in his salvation.”

For the hand of the Lord will rest on this mountain,

and Moab shall be trampled down in his place,

as straw is trampled down in a dunghill.

NIVNew International Version (2011)

On this mountain the Lord Almighty will prepare

a feast of rich food for all peoples,

a banquet of aged wine—

the best of meats and the finest of wines.

On this mountain he will destroy

the shroud that enfolds all peoples,

the sheet that covers all nations;

he will swallow up death forever.

The Sovereign Lord will wipe away the tears

from all faces;

he will remove his people’s disgrace

from all the earth.

The Lord has spoken.

In that day they will say,

“Surely this is our God;

we trusted in him, and he saved us.

This is the Lord, we trusted in him;

let us rejoice and be glad in his salvation.”

The hand of the Lord will rest on this mountain;

but Moab will be trampled in their land

as straw is trampled down in the manure.

CSBChristian Standard Bible

On this mountain,

the Lord of Armies will prepare for all the peoples a feast of choice meat,

a feast with aged wine, prime cuts of choice meat, fine vintage wine.

On this mountain

he will swallow up the burial shroud,

the shroud over all the peoples,

the sheet covering all the nations.

When he has swallowed up death once and for all,

the Lord God will wipe away the tears

from every face

and remove his people’s disgrace

from the whole earth,

for the Lord has spoken.

On that day it will be said,

“Look, this is our God;

we have waited for him, and he has saved us.

This is the Lord; we have waited for him.

Let’s rejoice and be glad in his salvation.”

For the Lord’s power will rest on this mountain.

But Moab will be trampled in his place

as straw is trampled in a dung pile.

NLTNew Living Translation

In Jerusalem, the Lord of Heaven’s Armies

will spread a wonderful feast

for all the people of the world.

It will be a delicious banquet

with clear, well-aged wine and choice meat.

There he will remove the cloud of gloom,

the shadow of death that hangs over the earth.

He will swallow up death forever!

The Sovereign Lord will wipe away all tears.

He will remove forever all insults and mockery

against his land and people.

The Lord has spoken!

In that day the people will proclaim,

“This is our God!

We trusted in him, and he saved us!

This is the Lord, in whom we trusted.

Let us rejoice in the salvation he brings!”

For the Lord’s hand of blessing will rest on Jerusalem.

But Moab will be crushed.

It will be like straw trampled down and left to rot.

LEBThe Lexham English Bible

And on this mountain Yahweh of hosts will make for all peoples a rich feast,

a feast of aged wines, fat filled with marrow, filtered aged wine.

And on this mountain he will destroy the face of the shroud,

the shroud over all peoples,

and the woven covering over all nations.

He will destroy death forever,

and the Lord Yahweh will wipe off the tears from all faces,

and he will remove the disgrace of his people from all the earth,

for Yahweh has spoken.

And one will say, on that day,

“Look! This is our God! We have waited for him and he saved us!

This is Yahweh; we waited for him!

Let us be glad,

and let us rejoice in his salvation.”

For the hand of Yahweh will rest on this mountain,

and Moab shall be trampled down under him

as a heap of straw is trampled down in waters of a dung heap.

KJV 1900King James Version

And in this mountain shall the Lord of hosts make unto all people

A feast of fat things, a feast of wines on the lees,

Of fat things full of marrow, of wines on the lees well refined.

And he will destroy in this mountain

The face of the covering cast over all people,

And the vail that is spread over all nations.

He will swallow up death in victory;

And the Lord God will wipe away tears from off all faces;

And the rebuke of his people shall he take away from off all the earth:

For the Lord hath spoken it.

And it shall be said in that day,

Lo, this is our God;

We have waited for him, and he will save us:

This is the Lord; we have waited for him,

We will be glad and rejoice in his salvation.

For in this mountain shall the hand of the Lord rest,

And Moab shall be trodden down under him,

Even as straw is trodden down for the dunghill.
