Footnotes

  1. 4 Or “keep quiet”; “Silence!”
  2. 5 For location see ; ; .
  3. 6 The Hebrew text (23:2b–3a) reads literally, “merchant of Sidon, the one who crosses the sea, they filled you, and on the deep waters.” Instead of מִלְאוּךְ (mil’ukh, “they filled you”) the Qumran scroll 1QIsaa reads מלאכיך (“your messengers”). The translation assumes an emendation of מִלְאוּךְ to מַלְאָכָו (mal’akhav, “his messengers”), taking the vav (ו) on וּבְמַיִם (uvémayim) as improperly placed; instead it should be the final letter of the preceding word.
  4. 7 Heb “seed of Shihor.” “Shihor” probably refers to the east branch of the Nile. See Jer 2:18 and 1009 שִׁיחוֹר.
  5. 8 Heb “the harvest of the Nile.”
  6. 9 Heb “[is] her revenue.”
  7. 10 Heb “merchandise”; , “a mart of nations”; “the merchandise mart of the world.”

Be still, O inhabitants of the coast;

the merchants of Sidon, who cross the sea, have filled you.

NIVNew International Version (2011)

Be silent, you people of the island

and you merchants of Sidon,

whom the seafarers have enriched.

On the great waters

came the grain of the Shihor;

the harvest of the Nile was the revenue of Tyre,

and she became the marketplace of the nations.

CSBChristian Standard Bible

Mourn, inhabitants of the coastland,

you merchants of Sidon;

your agents have crossed the sea

over deep water.

Tyre’s revenue was the grain from Shihor—

the harvest of the Nile.

She was the merchant among the nations.

NLTNew Living Translation

Mourn in silence, you people of the coast

and you merchants of Sidon.

Your traders crossed the sea,

sailing over deep waters.

They brought you grain from Egypt

and harvests from along the Nile.

You were the marketplace of the world.

LEBThe Lexham English Bible

Be still, inhabitants of the coast,

merchant of Sidon, who travels over the sea, they filled you.

And on the great waters is the seed of Shihor,

the harvest of the Nile is its produce,

and she was the merchandise of the nations.

KJV 1900King James Version

Be still, ye inhabitants of the isle;

Thou whom the merchants of Zidon, that pass over the sea, have replenished.

And by great waters the seed of Sihor,

The harvest of the river, is her revenue;

And she is a mart of nations.
