2:12Indeed, the Lord who commands armies has planned a day of judgment,28
for29 all the high and mighty,
for all who are proud—they will be humiliated;
2:13for all the cedars of Lebanon,
that are so high and mighty,
for all the oaks of Bashan;30
2:14for all the tall mountains,
for all the high hills,31
2:15for every high tower,
for every fortified wall,
2:16for all the large ships,32
for all the impressive33 ships.34
2:17Proud men will be humiliated,
arrogant men will be brought low;35
the Lord alone will be exalted36
in that day.
Footnotes
- 28 Heb “indeed [or “for”] the Lord who commands armies [traditionally, the Lord of hosts] has a day.”
- 29 Or “against” (, , ).
- 30 The cedars of Lebanon and oaks of Bashan were well-known for their size and prominence. They make apt symbols here for powerful men who think of themselves as prominent and secure.
- 31 The high mountains and hills symbolize the apparent security of proud men, as do the high tower and fortified wall of v. 15.
- 32 Heb “the ships of Tarshish.” This probably refers to large ships either made in or capable of traveling to the distant western port of Tarshish.
- 33 Heb “desirable”; , “stately”; “beautiful.”
- 34 On the meaning of this word, which appears only here in the Hebrew Bible, see H. R. Cohen, Biblical Hapax Legomena (), 41–42. The ships mentioned in this verse were the best of their class, and therefore an apt metaphor for the proud men being denounced in this speech.
- 35 Heb “and the pride of men will be brought down, and the arrogance of men will be brought low.” As in v. 11, the repetition of the verbs שָׁפַל (shafal) and שָׁחָח (shakhakh) from v. 9 draws attention to the appropriate nature of the judgment. Those proud men who “bow low” before idols will be forced to “bow low” before God when he judges their sin.
- 36 Or “elevated”; “praised”; “honored.”

For the Lord of hosts has a day
against all that is proud and lofty,
against all that is lifted up—and it shall be brought low;
against all the cedars of Lebanon,
lofty and lifted up;
and against all the oaks of Bashan;
against all the lofty mountains,
and against all the uplifted hills;
against every high tower,
and against every fortified wall;
against all the ships of Tarshish,
and against all the beautiful craft.
And the haughtiness of man shall be humbled,
and the lofty pride of men shall be brought low,
and the Lord alone will be exalted in that day.

The Lord Almighty has a day in store
for all the proud and lofty,
for all that is exalted
(and they will be humbled),
for all the cedars of Lebanon, tall and lofty,
and all the oaks of Bashan,
for all the towering mountains
and all the high hills,
for every lofty tower
and every fortified wall,
for every trading ship
and every stately vessel.
The arrogance of man will be brought low
and human pride humbled;
the Lord alone will be exalted in that day,

CSBChristian Standard Bible
For a day belonging to the Lord of Armies is coming
against all that is proud and lofty,
against all that is lifted up—it will be humbled—
against all the cedars of Lebanon,
lofty and lifted up,
against all the oaks of Bashan,
against all the high mountains,
against all the lofty hills,
against every high tower,
against every fortified wall,
against every ship of Tarshish,
and against every splendid sea vessel.
The pride of mankind will be brought low,
and human loftiness will be humbled;
the Lord alone will be exalted on that day.

NLTNew Living Translation
For the Lord of Heaven’s Armies
has a day of reckoning.
He will punish the proud and mighty
and bring down everything that is exalted.
He will cut down the tall cedars of Lebanon
and all the mighty oaks of Bashan.
He will level all the high mountains
and all the lofty hills.
He will break down every high tower
and every fortified wall.
He will destroy all the great trading ships
and every magnificent vessel.
Human pride will be humbled,
and human arrogance will be brought down.
Only the Lord will be exalted
on that day of judgment.

LEBThe Lexham English Bible
For there is a day for Yahweh of hosts
against all of the proud and the lofty
and against all that is lifted up and humble,
and against all the lofty and lifted up cedars of Lebanon,
and against all the large trees of Bashan,
and against all the high mountains,
and against all the lofty hills,
and against every kind of high tower,
and against every kind of fortified wall,
and against all the ships of Tarshish,
and against all the ships of desire.
And the haughtiness of the people shall be humbled,
and the pride of everyone shall be brought low,
and Yahweh alone will be exalted on that day.

For the day of the Lord of hosts shall be upon every one that is proud and lofty,
And upon every one that is lifted up; and he shall be brought low:
And upon all the cedars of Lebanon, that are high and lifted up,
And upon all the oaks of Bashan,
And upon all the high mountains,
And upon all the hills that are lifted up,
And upon every high tower,
And upon every fenced wall,
And upon all the ships of Tarshish,
And upon all pleasant pictures.

And the haughtiness of men shall be made low:
And the Lord alone shall be exalted in that day.
