14:1The Lord will certainly have compassion on Jacob;1 he will again choose Israel as his special people2 and restore3 them to their land. Resident foreigners will join them and unite with the family4 of Jacob. 14:2Nations will take them and bring them back to their own place. Then the family of Jacob will make foreigners their servants as they settle in the Lord’s land.5 They will make their captors captives and rule over the ones who oppressed them.
Footnotes
- 1 The sentence begins with כִּי (ki), which is understood as asseverative (“certainly”) in the translation. Another option is to translate, “For the Lord will have compassion.” In this case one of the reasons for Babylon’s coming demise (13:22b) is the Lord’s desire to restore his people.
- 2 The words “as his special people” are supplied in the translation for clarification.
- 3 Or “settle” (, , , ).
- 4 Heb “house.”
- 5 Heb “and the house of Jacob will take possession of them [i.e., the nations], on the land of the Lord, as male servants and female servants.”

NLTNew Living Translation
But the Lord will have mercy on the descendants of Jacob. He will choose Israel as his special people once again. He will bring them back to settle once again in their own land. And people from many different nations will come and join them there and unite with the people of Israel. The nations of the world will help the people of Israel to return, and those who come to live in the Lord’s land will serve them. Those who captured Israel will themselves be captured, and Israel will rule over its enemies.

For the Lord will have mercy on Jacob,
And will yet choose Israel,
And set them in their own land:
And the strangers shall be joined with them,
And they shall cleave to the house of Jacob.

And the house of Israel shall possess them in the land of the Lord
For servants and handmaids:
