Footnotes

  1. 35 Heb “as the devastation of Shalman.” The genitive noun שַׁלְמַן (shalman, “Shalman”) functions as a subjective genitive: “as Shalman devastated [Beth Arbel].”
  2. 36 For location see ; ; ; ; .
  3. 37 Heb “when the dawn is cut off” or “when the day ceases.” Cf. “When the day of judgment dawns.”
  4. 38 The root דָמָה (damah, “to be cut off, cease to exist, be destroyed”; 198 דָמָה; דמה) is repeated in the Hebrew text. The form נִדְמֹה (nidmoh, Niphal infinitive absolute) appears in the first colon, and the form נִדְמָה (nidmah, Niphal perfect 3rd person masculine singular) appears in the second colon. This striking repetition creates a dramatic wordplay which, for stylistic reasons, cannot be reproduced in English translations: “The moment the dawn ceases to exist (i.e., at the break of dawn), the king of Israel will cease to exist.”

ESVEnglish Standard Version

therefore the tumult of war shall arise among your people,

and all your fortresses shall be destroyed,

as Shalman destroyed Beth-arbel on the day of battle;

mothers were dashed in pieces with their children.

Thus it shall be done to you, O Bethel,

because of your great evil.

At dawn the king of Israel

shall be utterly cut off.

NIVNew International Version (2011)

the roar of battle will rise against your people,

so that all your fortresses will be devastated—

as Shalman devastated Beth Arbel on the day of battle,

when mothers were dashed to the ground with their children.

So will it happen to you, Bethel,

because your wickedness is great.

When that day dawns,

the king of Israel will be completely destroyed.

CSBChristian Standard Bible

the roar of battle will rise against your people,

and all your fortifications will be demolished

in a day of war,

like Shalman’s destruction of Beth-arbel.

Mothers will be dashed to pieces

along with their children.

So it will be done to you, Bethel,

because of your extreme evil.

At dawn the king of Israel will be totally destroyed.

NLTNew Living Translation

Now the terrors of war

will rise among your people.

All your fortifications will fall,

just as when Shalman destroyed Beth-arbel.

Even mothers and children

were dashed to death there.

You will share that fate, Bethel,

because of your great wickedness.

When the day of judgment dawns,

the king of Israel will be completely destroyed.

LEBThe Lexham English Bible

The tumult of war will rise up against your people,

and all your fortresses will be destroyed,

as Shalman destroyed Beth-arbel;

on the day of war

mothers were dashed to pieces with their children.

So it will be done to you, O Bethel,

because of the evil of your wickedness;

at dawn, the king of Israel

will be utterly destroyed.

KJV 1900King James Version

Therefore shall a tumult arise among thy people,

And all thy fortresses shall be spoiled,

As Shalman spoiled Beth-arbel in the day of battle:

The mother was dashed in pieces upon her children.

So shall Beth-el do unto you because of your great wickedness:

In a morning shall the king of Israel utterly be cut off.
