11:11By faith, even though Sarah herself was barren and he was too old,12 he received the ability to procreate,13 because he regarded the one who had given the promise to be trustworthy. 11:12So in fact children14 were fathered by one man—and this one as good as dead—like the number of stars in the sky and like the innumerable grains of sand15 on the seashore.16

Footnotes

  1. 12 Grk “past the time of maturity.”
  2. 13 Grk “power to deposit seed.” Though it is not as likely, some construe this phrase to mean “power to conceive seed,” making the whole verse about Sarah: “by faith, even though Sarah herself was barren and too old, she received ability to conceive, because she regarded the one who had given the promise to be trustworthy.”
  3. 14 Grk “these”; in the translation the referent (children) has been specified for clarity.
  4. 15 Grk a collective “the sand.”
  5. 16 An allusion to Gen 22:17 (which itself goes back to Gen 15:5).

ESVEnglish Standard Version

By faith Sarah herself received power to conceive, even when she was past the age, since she considered him faithful who had promised. Therefore from one man, and him as good as dead, were born descendants as many as the stars of heaven and as many as the innumerable grains of sand by the seashore.

NIVNew International Version (2011)

And by faith even Sarah, who was past childbearing age, was enabled to bear children because she considered him faithful who had made the promise. And so from this one man, and he as good as dead, came descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and as countless as the sand on the seashore.

CSBChristian Standard Bible

By faith even Sarah herself, when she was unable to have children, received power to conceive offspring, even though she was past the age, since she considered that the one who had promised was faithful. Therefore, from one man—in fact, from one as good as dead—came offspring as numerous as the stars of the sky and as innumerable as the grains of sand along the seashore.

NLTNew Living Translation

It was by faith that even Sarah was able to have a child, though she was barren and was too old. She believed that God would keep his promise. And so a whole nation came from this one man who was as good as dead—a nation with so many people that, like the stars in the sky and the sand on the seashore, there is no way to count them.

LEBThe Lexham English Bible

By faith also, with Sarah, he received the ability to procreate even past the normal age, because he regarded the one who had promised to be faithful. And therefore these were fathered from one man, and he being as good as dead, as the stars of heaven in number and like the innumerable sand by the shore of the sea.

KJV 1900King James Version

Through faith also Sara herself received strength to conceive seed, and was delivered of a child when she was past age, because she judged him faithful who had promised. Therefore sprang there even of one, and him as good as dead, so many as the stars of the sky in multitude, and as the sand which is by the sea shore innumerable.
