Read in Logos
Genesis 9:13: I have set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and the earth.

Footnotes

  1. 25 The verb וַהֲקִמֹתִי (vahaqimoti) is a perfect with the vav (ו) consecutive and should be translated with the English present tense, just as the participle at the beginning of the speech was (v. 9). Another option is to translate both forms with the English future tense (“I will confirm”).
  2. 26 Heb “all flesh.”
  3. 27 Heb “cut off.”
  4. 28 Heb “and all flesh will not be cut off again by the waters of the flood.”
  5. 29 Heb “sign.”
  6. 30 On the making of covenants in Genesis, see W. F. Albright, “The Hebrew Expression for ‘Making a Covenant’ in Pre-Israelite Documents,” 121 (1951): 21–22.
  7. 31 Heb “between me and between you.”
  8. 32 The words “a covenant” are supplied in the translation for clarification.
  9. 33 The Hebrew term עוֹלָם (’olam) means “ever, forever, lasting, perpetual.” The covenant would extend to subsequent generations.
  10. 34 The translation assumes that the perfect verbal form is used rhetorically, emphasizing the certainty of the action. Other translation options include “I have placed” (present perfect; cf. , ) and “I place” (instantaneous perfect; cf. ).
  11. 35 The Hebrew word קֶשֶׁת (qeshet) normally refers to a warrior’s bow. Some understand this to mean that God the warrior hangs up his battle bow at the end of the flood, indicating he is now at peace with humankind, but others question the legitimacy of this proposal. See C. Westermann, Genesis, 1:, and G. J. Wenham, Genesis (), 1:.
  12. 36 The perfect verbal form with vav (ו) consecutive here has the same aspectual function as the preceding perfect of certitude.
  13. 37 The temporal indicator (וְהָיָה, véhayah, conjunction + the perfect verb form), often translated “it will be,” anticipates a future development.
  14. 38 Heb “which [is] between me and between you.”
  15. 39 Heb “all flesh.”
  16. 40 Heb “to destroy.”
  17. 41 Heb “all flesh.”
  18. 42 The translation assumes that the infinitive לִזְכֹּר (lizkor, “to remember”) here expresses the result of seeing the rainbow. Another option is to understand it as indicating purpose, in which case it could be translated, “I will look at it so that I may remember.”

My bow I have set in the clouds, and it shall be for a sign of the covenant between me and between the earth. And when I make clouds appear over the earth the bow shall be seen in the clouds. Then I will remember my covenant that is between me and you, and between every living creature, with all flesh. And the waters of a flood will never again cause the destruction of all flesh. The bow shall be in the clouds, and I will see it, so as to remember the everlasting covenant between God and between every living creature, with all flesh that is upon the earth.”

And I will establish my covenant with you; neither shall all flesh be cut off any more by the waters of a flood; neither shall there any more be a flood to destroy the earth. And God said, This is the token of the covenant which I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for perpetual generations: I do set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be for a token of a covenant between me and the earth. And it shall come to pass, when I bring a cloud over the earth, that the bow shall be seen in the cloud: And I will remember my covenant, which is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh; and the waters shall no more become a flood to destroy all flesh. And the bow shall be in the cloud; and I will look upon it, that I may remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is upon the earth.
