14:22But Abram replied to the king of Sodom, “I raise my hand54 to the Lord, the Most High God, Creator of heaven and earth, and vow5514:23that I will take nothing56 belonging to you, not even a thread or the strap of a sandal. That way you can never say, ‘It is I57 who made Abram rich.’ 14:24I will take nothing58 except compensation for what the young men have eaten.59 As for the share of the men who went with me—Aner, Eshcol, and Mamre—let them take their share.”
Footnotes
- 54 Abram takes an oath, raising his hand as a solemn gesture. The translation understands the perfect tense as having an instantaneous nuance: “Here and now I raise my hand.”
- 55 The words “and vow” are not in the Hebrew text, but are supplied in the translation for clarification.
- 56 The oath formula is elliptical, reading simply: “… if I take.” It is as if Abram says, “[May the Lord deal with me] if I take,” meaning, “I will surely not take.” The positive oath would add the negative adverb and be the reverse: “[God will deal with me] if I do not take,” meaning, “I certainly will.”
- 57 The Hebrew text adds the independent pronoun (“I”) to the verb form for emphasis.
- 58 The words “I will take nothing” have been supplied in the translation for stylistic reasons.
- 59 Heb “except only what the young men have eaten.”

But Abram said to the king of Sodom, “I have lifted my hand to the Lord, God Most High, Possessor of heaven and earth, that I would not take a thread or a sandal strap or anything that is yours, lest you should say, ‘I have made Abram rich.’ I will take nothing but what the young men have eaten, and the share of the men who went with me. But Abram said to the king of Sodom, “With raised hand I have sworn an oath to the Lord, God Most High, Creator of heaven and earth, that I will accept nothing belonging to you, not even a thread or the strap of a sandal, so that you will never be able to say, ‘I made Abram rich.’ I will accept nothing but what my men have eaten and the share that belongs to the men who went with me—to Aner, Eshkol and Mamre. Let them have their share.”

Abram replied to the king of Sodom, “I solemnly swear to the Lord, God Most High, Creator of heaven and earth, that I will not take so much as a single thread or sandal thong from what belongs to you. Otherwise you might say, ‘I am the one who made Abram rich.’ I will accept only what my young warriors have already eaten, and I request that you give a fair share of the goods to my allies—Aner, Eshcol, and Mamre.”

And Abram said to the king of Sodom, I have lift up mine hand unto the Lord, the most high God, the possessor of heaven and earth, That I will not take from a thread even to a shoelatchet, and that I will not take any thing that is thine, lest thou shouldest say, I have made Abram rich: Save only that which the young men have eaten, and the portion of the men which went with me, Aner, Eshcol, and Mamre; let them take their portion.
