6:8“ ‘But I will spare some of you. Some will escape the sword when you are scattered in foreign lands.106:9Then your survivors will remember me among the nations where they are exiled. They will realize11 how I was crushed by their unfaithful12 heart which turned from me and by their eyes which lusted after their idols. They will loathe themselves13 because of the evil they have done and because of all their abominable practices.
Footnotes
- 10 Heb “when you have fugitives from the sword among the nations, when you are scattered among the lands.”
- 11 The words “they will realize” are not in the Hebrew text; they are added here for stylistic reasons since this clause assumes the previous verb “to remember” or “to take into account.”
- 12 Heb “how I was broken by their adulterous heart.” The image of God being “broken” is startling, but perfectly natural within the metaphorical framework of God as offended husband. The idiom must refer to the intense grief that Israel’s unfaithfulness caused God. For a discussion of the syntax and semantics of the Hebrew text, see M. Greenberg, Ezekiel (), 1:.
- 13 Heb adds “in their faces.”

“Yet I will leave some of you alive. When you have among the nations some who escape the sword, and when you are scattered through the countries, then those of you who escape will remember me among the nations where they are carried captive, how I have been broken over their whoring heart that has departed from me and over their eyes that go whoring after their idols. And they will be loathsome in their own sight for the evils that they have committed, for all their abominations.

“ ‘But I will spare some, for some of you will escape the sword when you are scattered among the lands and nations. Then in the nations where they have been carried captive, those who escape will remember me—how I have been grieved by their adulterous hearts, which have turned away from me, and by their eyes, which have lusted after their idols. They will loathe themselves for the evil they have done and for all their detestable practices.

“Yet I will leave a remnant when you are scattered among the nations, for throughout the countries there will be some of you who will escape the sword. Then your survivors will remember me among the nations where they are taken captive, how I was crushed by their promiscuous hearts that turned away from me and by their eyes that lusted after their idols. They will loathe themselves because of the evil things they did, their detestable actions of every kind.

“But I will let a few of my people escape destruction, and they will be scattered among the nations of the world. Then when they are exiled among the nations, they will remember me. They will recognize how hurt I am by their unfaithful hearts and lustful eyes that long for their idols. Then at last they will hate themselves for all their detestable sins.

LEBThe Lexham English Bible
But I will spare some, so there will be for you fugitives from the sword among the nations when you are scattered in the countries. And your fugitives will remember me among the nations to which they were taken captive, that I was shattered by their adulterous heart which departed from me, and by their adulterous eyes which went after their idols, and they will feel loathing for themselves, for the evil that they did, for all of their detestable things.

KJV 1900King James Version
Yet will I leave a remnant, that ye may have some that shall escape the sword among the nations, when ye shall be scattered through the countries. And they that escape of you shall remember me among the nations whither they shall be carried captives, because I am broken with their whorish heart, which hath departed from me, and with their eyes, which go a whoring after their idols: and they shall lothe themselves for the evils which they have committed in all their abominations.
