The Valley of Dry Bones
37:1The hand1 of the Lord was on me, and he brought me out by the Spirit of the Lord and placed2 me in the midst of the valley, and it was full of bones. 37:2He made me walk all around among them.3 I realized4 there were a great many bones in the valley and they were very dry. 37:3He said to me, “Son of man, can these bones live?” I said to him, “Sovereign Lord, you know.” 37:4Then he said to me, “Prophesy over these bones, and tell them: ‘Dry bones, hear the word of the Lord.
Footnotes
- 1 Or “power.” Hand in the OT can refer metaphorically to power, authority, or influence. In Ezekiel God’s hand being on the prophet is regularly associated with communication or a vision from God (3:14, 22; 8:1; 37:1; 40:1).
- 2 Heb “caused me to rest.”
- 3 Heb “and he made me pass over them, around, around.”
- 4 The word הִנֵּה (hinneh, traditionally “behold”) indicates becoming aware of something and is here translated as “I realized” because it results from Ezekiel’s recognition of the situation around him. In Hebrew, the exclamation is repeated in the following sentence.

The Lord took hold of me, and I was carried away by the Spirit of the Lord to a valley filled with bones. He led me all around among the bones that covered the valley floor. They were scattered everywhere across the ground and were completely dried out. Then he asked me, “Son of man, can these bones become living people again?”
“O Sovereign Lord,” I replied, “you alone know the answer to that.”
Then he said to me, “Speak a prophetic message to these bones and say, ‘Dry bones, listen to the word of the Lord!
