34:33When Moses finished70 speaking71 with them, he would72 put a veil on his face. 34:34But when Moses went in73 before the Lord to speak with him, he would remove the veil until he came out.74 Then he would come out and tell the Israelites what he had been commanded.7534:35When the Israelites would see76 the face of Moses, that77 the skin of Moses’ face shone, Moses would put the veil on his face again, until he went in to speak with the Lord.78
Footnotes
- 70 Heb “and Moses finished”; the clause is subordinated as a temporal clause to the next clause.
- 71 The Piel infinitive construct is the object of the preposition; the whole phrase serves as the direct object of the verb “finished.”
- 72 Throughout this section the actions of Moses and the people are frequentative. The text tells what happened regularly.
- 73 The construction uses a infinitive construct for the temporal clause; it is prefixed with the temporal preposition: “and in the going in of Moses.”
- 74 The temporal clause begins with the temporal preposition “until,” followed by an infinitive construct with the suffixed subjective genitive.
- 75 The form is the Pual imperfect, but since the context demands a past tense here, in fact a past perfect tense, this is probably an old preterite form without a vav consecutive.
- 76 Now the perfect tense with vav consecutive is subordinated to the next clause, “Moses returned the veil.…”
- 77 Verbs of seeing often take two accusatives. Here, the second is the noun clause explaining what it was about the face that they saw.
- 78 Heb “with him”; the referent (the Lord) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

And when Moses had finished speaking with them, he put a veil over his face.
Whenever Moses went in before the Lord to speak with him, he would remove the veil, until he came out. And when he came out and told the people of Israel what he was commanded, the people of Israel would see the face of Moses, that the skin of Moses’ face was shining. And Moses would put the veil over his face again, until he went in to speak with him.

NIVNew International Version (2011)
When Moses finished speaking to them, he put a veil over his face. But whenever he entered the Lord’s presence to speak with him, he removed the veil until he came out. And when he came out and told the Israelites what he had been commanded, they saw that his face was radiant. Then Moses would put the veil back over his face until he went in to speak with the Lord.

When Moses had finished speaking with them, he put a veil over his face. But whenever Moses went before the Lord to speak with him, he would remove the veil until he came out. Then Moses would put the veil over his face again until he went to speak with the Lord.

NLTNew Living Translation
When Moses finished speaking with them, he covered his face with a veil. But whenever he went into the Tent of Meeting to speak with the Lord, he would remove the veil until he came out again. Then he would give the people whatever instructions the Lord had given him, and the people of Israel would see the radiant glow of his face. So he would put the veil over his face until he returned to speak with the Lord.

And Moses finished speaking with them, and he put a veil on his face. And when Moses came before Yahweh to speak with him, he would remove the veil until he went out, and he would go out and would speak to the Israelites what he had been commanded. And the Israelites would see the face of Moses, that the skin of the face of Moses shone, and Moses would put back the veil on his face until his coming to speak with him.

KJV 1900King James Version
And till Moses had done speaking with them, he put a vail on his face. But when Moses went in before the Lord to speak with him, he took the vail off, until he came out. And he came out, and spake unto the children of Israel that which he was commanded. And the children of Israel saw the face of Moses, that the skin of Moses’ face shone: and Moses put the vail upon his face again, until he went in to speak with him.
