18:22They will judge49 the people under normal circumstances,50 and every difficult case51 they will bring to you, but every small case52 they themselves will judge, so that53 you may make it easier for yourself,54 and they will bear the burden55 with you.

Footnotes

  1. 49 The form is the perfect tense with the vav (ו) consecutive, making it equivalent to the imperfect of instruction in the preceding verse.
  2. 50 Heb “in every time,” meaning “in all normal cases” or “under normal circumstances.” The same phrase occurs in v. 26.
  3. 51 Heb “great thing.”
  4. 52 Heb “thing.”
  5. 53 The vav here shows the result or the purpose of the instructions given.
  6. 54 The expression וְהָקֵל מֵעָלֶיךָ (véhaqel me’aleykha) means literally “and make it light off yourself.” The word plays against the word for “heavy” used earlier—since it was a heavy or burdensome task, Moses must lighten the load.
  7. 55 Here “the burden” has been supplied.

ESVEnglish Standard Version

And let them judge the people at all times. Every great matter they shall bring to you, but any small matter they shall decide themselves. So it will be easier for you, and they will bear the burden with you.

NIVNew International Version (2011)

Have them serve as judges for the people at all times, but have them bring every difficult case to you; the simple cases they can decide themselves. That will make your load lighter, because they will share it with you.

CSBChristian Standard Bible

They should judge the people at all times. Then they can bring you every major case but judge every minor case themselves. In this way you will lighten your load, and they will bear it with you.

NLTNew Living Translation

They should always be available to solve the people’s common disputes, but have them bring the major cases to you. Let the leaders decide the smaller matters themselves. They will help you carry the load, making the task easier for you.

LEBThe Lexham English Bible

And let them judge the people all the time, and every major issue they will bring to you, and every minor issue they will judge themselves. And so lighten it for yourself, and they will bear it with you.

KJV 1900King James Version

And let them judge the people at all seasons: and it shall be, that every great matter they shall bring unto thee, but every small matter they shall judge: so shall it be easier for thyself, and they shall bear the burden with thee.
