Israel’s Rebellion

32:15But Jeshurun32 became fat and kicked,

you33 got fat, thick, and stuffed!

Then he deserted the God who made him,

and treated the Rock who saved him with contempt.

32:16They made him jealous with other gods,34

they enraged him with abhorrent idols.35

32:17They sacrificed to demons, not God,

to gods they had not known;

to new gods who had recently come along,

gods your ancestors36 had not known about.

32:18You have forgotten37 the Rock who fathered you,

and put out of mind the God who gave you birth.

Footnotes

  1. 32 To make the continuity of the referent clear, some English versions substitute “Jacob” here (, ) while others replace “Jeshurun” with “Israel” (, , ) or “the Lord’s people” (). Jeshurun is a term of affection derived from the Hebrew verb יָשַׁר (yashar, “be upright”). Here it speaks of Israel “in an ideal situation, with its ‘uprightness’ due more to God’s help than his own efforts” (M. Mulder, 6:475).
  2. 33 The reads the third person masculine singular (“he”) for the second person masculine singular (“you”), but such alterations are unnecessary in Hebrew poetic texts where subjects fluctuate frequently and without warning.
  3. 34 Heb “with strange (things).” The actually supplies diis (“gods”).
  4. 35 Heb “abhorrent (things)” (cf. ). A number of English versions understand this as referring to “idols” (, , , ), while supplies “acts.”
  5. 36 Heb “your fathers.”
  6. 37 The Hebrew text is corrupt here; the translation follows the suggestion offered in שׁיה. Cf. , “You neglected”; “You deserted”; “You were unmindful of.”

ESVEnglish Standard Version

“But Jeshurun grew fat, and kicked;

you grew fat, stout, and sleek;

then he forsook God who made him

and scoffed at the Rock of his salvation.

They stirred him to jealousy with strange gods;

with abominations they provoked him to anger.

They sacrificed to demons that were not God,

to gods they had never known,

to new gods that had come recently,

whom your fathers had never dreaded.

You were unmindful of the Rock that bore you,

and you forgot the God who gave you birth.

NIVNew International Version (2011)

Jeshurun grew fat and kicked;

filled with food, they became heavy and sleek.

They abandoned the God who made them

and rejected the Rock their Savior.

They made him jealous with their foreign gods

and angered him with their detestable idols.

They sacrificed to false gods, which are not God—

gods they had not known,

gods that recently appeared,

gods your ancestors did not fear.

You deserted the Rock, who fathered you;

you forgot the God who gave you birth.

CSBChristian Standard Bible

Then Jeshurun became fat and rebelled—

you became fat, bloated, and gorged.

He abandoned the God who made him

and scorned the Rock of his salvation.

They provoked his jealousy with different gods;

they enraged him with detestable practices.

They sacrificed to demons, not God,

to gods they had not known,

new gods that had just arrived,

which your ancestors did not fear.

You ignored the Rock who gave you birth;

you forgot the God who gave birth to you.

NLTNew Living Translation

“But Israel soon became fat and unruly;

the people grew heavy, plump, and stuffed!

Then they abandoned the God who had made them;

they made light of the Rock of their salvation.

They stirred up his jealousy by worshiping foreign gods;

they provoked his fury with detestable deeds.

They offered sacrifices to demons, which are not God,

to gods they had not known before,

to new gods only recently arrived,

to gods their ancestors had never feared.

You neglected the Rock who had fathered you;

you forgot the God who had given you birth.

LEBThe Lexham English Bible

And Jeshurun grew fat, and he kicked;

you grew fat, you bloated, and you became obstinate;

and he abandoned God, his maker,

and he scoffed at the rock of his salvation.

They made him jealous with strange gods;

with detestable things they provoked him.

They sacrificed to the demons, not God,

to gods whom they had not known,

new gods who came from recent times;

their ancestors had not known them.

The rock who bore you, you neglected,

and you forgot God, the one giving you birth.

KJV 1900King James Version

But Jeshurun waxed fat, and kicked:

Thou art waxen fat, thou art grown thick, thou art covered with fatness;

Then he forsook God which made him,

And lightly esteemed the Rock of his salvation.

They provoked him to jealousy with strange gods,

With abominations provoked they him to anger.

They sacrificed unto devils, not to God;

To gods whom they knew not,

To new gods that came newly up,

Whom your fathers feared not.

Of the Rock that begat thee thou art unmindful,

And hast forgotten God that formed thee.
