Footnotes

  1. 25 The words “people from” are supplied in the translation for clarification.
  2. 26 Heb “to drink.”
  3. 27 Or “were not satisfied.”
  4. 28 Heb “you.” By metonymy the crops belonging to these people are meant. See the remainder of this verse, which describes the agricultural devastation caused by locusts.
  5. 29 The Hiphil infinitive construct is taken adverbially (“kept”) and connected to the activity of the locusts (). It also could be taken with the preceding sentence and related to the Lord’s interventions (“I kept destroying,” cf. , , , ), or it could be understood substantivally in construct with the following nouns (“Locusts devoured your many orchards,” cf. ; cf. also , ).
  6. 30 Or “gardens.”
  7. 31 Heb “in the manner [or “way”] of Egypt.”
  8. 32 Heb “of your camps [or “armies”].”
  9. 33 Several English versions substitute the first person pronoun (“I”) here for stylistic reasons (e.g., , , , , ).
  10. 34 Heb “like God’s overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah.” The divine name may be used in an idiomatic superlative sense here, in which case one might translate, “like the great [or “disastrous”] overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah.” The destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah is described in Gen 19:1–29.
  11. 35 Heb “like that which is burning.”

KJV 1900King James Version

So two or three cities wandered unto one city, to drink water;

But they were not satisfied:

Yet have ye not returned unto me, saith the Lord.

I have smitten you with blasting and mildew:

When your gardens and your vineyards and your fig trees and your olive trees increased,

The palmerworm devoured them:

Yet have ye not returned unto me, saith the Lord.

I have sent among you the pestilence after the manner of Egypt:

Your young men have I slain with the sword, and have taken away your horses;

And I have made the stink of your camps to come up unto your nostrils:

Yet have ye not returned unto me, saith the Lord.

I have overthrown some of you, as God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah,

And ye were as a firebrand plucked out of the burning:

Yet have ye not returned unto me, saith the Lord.
