Footnotes

  1. 43 Heb “and a place of refuge will perish from the swift.”
  2. 44 Heb “the strong will not increase his strength.”
  3. 45 Heb “the one who holds the bow.”
  4. 46 For the idiom of “holding [or “standing”] one’s ground” in battle, there is a similar phrase in Ezek 13:5; also related is the expression “to hold one’s own against” (or “to withstand”) in Judg 2:14; 2 Kgs 10:4; Dan 8:7 (see S. M. Paul, Amos [Hermeneia], ). Other options include “will not endure” or “will not survive.”
  5. 47 The last two lines read literally, “The one fast in his feet will not rescue [his life], and the rider of the horse will not rescue his life.” The phrase “his life” does double duty in the parallelism and should be understood in both lines.

ESVEnglish Standard Version

Flight shall perish from the swift,

and the strong shall not retain his strength,

nor shall the mighty save his life;

he who handles the bow shall not stand,

and he who is swift of foot shall not save himself,

nor shall he who rides the horse save his life;

NIVNew International Version (2011)

The swift will not escape,

the strong will not muster their strength,

and the warrior will not save his life.

The archer will not stand his ground,

the fleet-footed soldier will not get away,

and the horseman will not save his life.

CSBChristian Standard Bible

Escape will fail the swift,

the strong one will not maintain his strength,

and the warrior will not save his life.

The archer will not stand his ground,

the one who is swift of foot

will not save himself,

and the one riding a horse will not save his life.

NLTNew Living Translation

Your fastest runners will not get away.

The strongest among you will become weak.

Even mighty warriors will be unable to save themselves.

The archers will not stand their ground.

The swiftest runners won’t be fast enough to escape.

Even those riding horses won’t be able to save themselves.

LEBThe Lexham English Bible

Flight will perish from the swift and the strong person will not muster his strength and the warrior will not save his life. And the one who takes hold of the bow will not stand and the one who is swift on his feet will not save himself, nor will the one who rides the horse save his life.

KJV 1900King James Version

Therefore the flight shall perish from the swift,

And the strong shall not strengthen his force,

Neither shall the mighty deliver himself:

Neither shall he stand that handleth the bow;

And he that is swift of foot shall not deliver himself:

Neither shall he that rideth the horse deliver himself.
