Saul Returns to Jerusalem

9:26When he arrived in Jerusalem,59 he attempted to associate60 with the disciples, and they were all afraid of him, because they did not believe61 that he was a disciple. 9:27But Barnabas took62 Saul,63 brought64 him to the apostles, and related to them how he had seen the Lord on the road, that65 the Lord had spoken to him, and how in Damascus he had spoken out boldly66 in the name of Jesus. 9:28So he was staying with them, associating openly with them67 in Jerusalem, speaking out boldly in the name of the Lord. 9:29He was speaking and debating68 with the Greek-speaking Jews,69 but they were trying to kill him.

  1. 59 For location see ; ; ; ; ; ; ; ; .
  2. 60 Or “join.”
  3. 61 The participle πιστεύοντες (pisteuontes) has been translated as a causal adverbial participle.
  4. 62 Grk “taking Saul, brought him.” The participle ἐπιλαβόμενος (epilabomenos) has been translated as a finite verb due to requirements of contemporary English style.
  5. 63 Grk “him”; the referent (Saul) has been specified in the translation for clarity.
  6. 64 Grk “and brought,” but καί (kai) has not been translated since English normally uses a coordinating conjunction only between the last two elements in a series of three or more.
  7. 65 Grk “and that,” but καί (kai) has not been translated since English normally uses a coordinating conjunction only between the last two elements in a series of three or more.
  8. 66 On this verb which is used 7 times in Acts, see παρρησιάζομαι 1. See also v. 28.
  9. 67 Grk “he was with them going in and going out in Jerusalem.” The expression “going in and going out” is probably best taken as an idiom for association without hindrance. Some modern translations (, ) translate the phrase “moving about freely in Jerusalem,” although the retains the literal “he went in and out among them in Jerusalem.”
  10. 68 Or “arguing.” συζητέω 2 gives “dispute, debate, argue … τινί ‘w. someone’ ” for συνεζήτει (sunezētei).
  11. 69 Grk “the Hellenists,” but this descriptive term is largely unknown to the modern English reader. The translation “Greek-speaking Jews” attempts to convey something of who these were, but it was more than a matter of language spoken; it involved a degree of adoption of Greek culture as well.

ESVEnglish Standard Version

And when he had come to Jerusalem, he attempted to join the disciples. And they were all afraid of him, for they did not believe that he was a disciple. But Barnabas took him and brought him to the apostles and declared to them how on the road he had seen the Lord, who spoke to him, and how at Damascus he had preached boldly in the name of Jesus. So he went in and out among them at Jerusalem, preaching boldly in the name of the Lord. And he spoke and disputed against the Hellenists. But they were seeking to kill him.

NIVNew International Version (2011)

When he came to Jerusalem, he tried to join the disciples, but they were all afraid of him, not believing that he really was a disciple. But Barnabas took him and brought him to the apostles. He told them how Saul on his journey had seen the Lord and that the Lord had spoken to him, and how in Damascus he had preached fearlessly in the name of Jesus. So Saul stayed with them and moved about freely in Jerusalem, speaking boldly in the name of the Lord. He talked and debated with the Hellenistic Jews, but they tried to kill him.

CSBChristian Standard Bible

When he arrived in Jerusalem, he tried to join the disciples, but they were all afraid of him, since they did not believe he was a disciple. Barnabas, however, took him and brought him to the apostles and explained to them how Saul had seen the Lord on the road and that the Lord had talked to him, and how in Damascus he had spoken boldly in the name of Jesus. Saul was coming and going with them in Jerusalem, speaking boldly in the name of the Lord. He conversed and debated with the Hellenistic Jews, but they tried to kill him.

NLTNew Living Translation

When Saul arrived in Jerusalem, he tried to meet with the believers, but they were all afraid of him. They did not believe he had truly become a believer! Then Barnabas brought him to the apostles and told them how Saul had seen the Lord on the way to Damascus and how the Lord had spoken to Saul. He also told them that Saul had preached boldly in the name of Jesus in Damascus.

So Saul stayed with the apostles and went all around Jerusalem with them, preaching boldly in the name of the Lord. He debated with some Greek-speaking Jews, but they tried to murder him.

LEBThe Lexham English Bible
