Footnotes
- 122 The expression and gave them over suggests similarities to the judgment on the nations described by Paul in Rom 1:18–32.
- 123 Or “stars.” To worship the hosts of heaven. Their action violated Deut 4:19; 17:2–5. See Ps 106:36–43.
- 124 The two terms for sacrifices “semantically reinforce one another and are here combined essentially for emphasis” (L&N 53.20).
- 125 The Greek construction anticipates a negative reply which is indicated in the translation by the ‘tag’ question, “was it?”
- 126 Or “tent.” A tabernacle was a tent used to house religious objects or a shrine (i.e., a portable sanctuary).
- 127 Moloch was a Canaanite deity who was believed to be the god of the sky and the sun.

But God turned away from them and gave them over to the worship of the sun, moon and stars. This agrees with what is written in the book of the prophets:
“ ‘Did you bring me sacrifices and offerings
forty years in the wilderness, people of Israel?
You have taken up the tabernacle of Molek
and the star of your god Rephan,
the idols you made to worship.
Therefore I will send you into exile’ beyond Babylon.

God turned away and gave them up to worship the stars of heaven, as it is written in the book of the prophets:
House of Israel, did you bring me offerings and sacrifices
for forty years in the wilderness?
You took up the tent of Moloch
and the star of your god Rephan,
the images that you made to worship.
So I will send you into exile beyond Babylon.

Then God turned away from them and abandoned them to serve the stars of heaven as their gods! In the book of the prophets it is written,
‘Was it to me you were bringing sacrifices and offerings
during those forty years in the wilderness, Israel?
No, you carried your pagan gods—
the shrine of Molech,
the star of your god Rephan,
and the images you made to worship them.
So I will send you into exile
as far away as Babylon.’

and the star of the god Rephan,
the images that you made, to worship them,

Then God turned, and gave them up to worship the host of heaven; as it is written in the book of the prophets, O ye house of Israel, have ye offered to me slain beasts and sacrifices by the space of forty years in the wilderness? Yea, ye took up the tabernacle of Moloch, and the star of your god Remphan, figures which ye made to worship them: and I will carry you away beyond Babylon.
