Footnotes

  1. 88 Or “insensitive.” The heart of this people has become dull. The charge from Isaiah is like Stephen’s against the Jews of Jerusalem (Acts 7:51–53). They were a hard-hearted and disobedient people.
  2. 89 Grk “they hear heavily with their ears” (an idiom for slow comprehension).
  3. 90 Note how the failure to respond to the message of the gospel is seen as a failure to turn.
  4. 91 A quotation from Isa 6:9–10.

ESVEnglish Standard Version

For this people’s heart has grown dull,

and with their ears they can barely hear,

and their eyes they have closed;

lest they should see with their eyes

and hear with their ears

and understand with their heart

and turn, and I would heal them.’

NIVNew International Version (2011)

For this people’s heart has become calloused;

they hardly hear with their ears,

and they have closed their eyes.

Otherwise they might see with their eyes,

hear with their ears,

understand with their hearts

and turn, and I would heal them.’

CSBChristian Standard Bible

For the hearts of these people

have grown callous,

their ears are hard of hearing,

and they have shut their eyes;

otherwise they might see with their eyes

and hear with their ears,

understand with their heart

and turn,

and I would heal them.

NLTNew Living Translation

For the hearts of these people are hardened,

and their ears cannot hear,

and they have closed their eyes—

so their eyes cannot see,

and their ears cannot hear,

and their hearts cannot understand,

and they cannot turn to me

and let me heal them.’

LEBThe Lexham English Bible

For the heart of this people has become dull,

and with their ears they hear with difficulty,

and they have shut their eyes,

lest they see with their eyes,

and hear with their ears,

and understand with their heart,

and turn, and I would heal them.” ’

KJV 1900King James Version

For the heart of this people is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes have they closed; lest they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them.
