Footnotes

  1. 106 ἀγνοέω 1.b gives “not to know of pers.” as the meaning here, but “recognize” is a better translation in this context because recognition of the true identity of the one they condemned is the issue. See Acts 2:22–24; 4:26–28.
  2. 107 Grk “this one.”
  3. 108 Usually φωνή (phōnē) means “voice,” but φωνή 2.c has “Also of sayings in scripture … Ac 13:27.” They fulfilled the sayings. The people in Jerusalem and the Jewish rulers should have known better, because they had the story read to them weekly in the synagogue.
  4. 109 The participle κρίναντες (krinantes) is instrumental here.
  5. 110 The word “him” is not in the Greek text but is implied. Direct objects were often omitted in Greek when clear from the context, but must be supplied for the modern English reader.
  6. 111 Grk “And though.” Because of the difference between Greek style, which often begins sentences or clauses with “and,” and English style, which generally does not, καί (kai) has not been translated here.
  7. 112 The participle εὑρόντες (heurontes) has been translated as a concessive adverbial participle.
  8. 113 No basis. Luke insists on Jesus’ innocence again and again in Luke 23:1–25.
  9. 114 Grk “no basis for death,” but in this context a sentence of death is clearly indicated.

The people of Jerusalem and their rulers did not recognize Jesus, yet in condemning him they fulfilled the words of the prophets that are read every Sabbath. Though they found no proper ground for a death sentence, they asked Pilate to have him executed.

CSBChristian Standard Bible

Since the residents of Jerusalem and their rulers did not recognize him or the sayings of the prophets that are read every Sabbath, they have fulfilled their words by condemning him. Though they found no grounds for the death sentence, they asked Pilate to have him killed.

NLTNew Living Translation

The people in Jerusalem and their leaders did not recognize Jesus as the one the prophets had spoken about. Instead, they condemned him, and in doing this they fulfilled the prophets’ words that are read every Sabbath. They found no legal reason to execute him, but they asked Pilate to have him killed anyway.

LEBThe Lexham English Bible

For those who live in Jerusalem and their rulers, because they did not recognize this one, and the voices of the prophets that are read on every Sabbath, fulfilled them by condemning him. And although they found no charge worthy of death, they asked Pilate that he be executed.

KJV 1900King James Version

For they that dwell at Jerusalem, and their rulers, because they knew him not, nor yet the voices of the prophets which are read every sabbath day, they have fulfilled them in condemning him. And though they found no cause of death in him, yet desired they Pilate that he should be slain.
