Footnotes

  1. 91 Or “From the offspring”; Grk “From the seed.” From the descendants (Grk “seed”). On the importance of the seed promise involving Abraham, see Gal 3:6–29.
  2. 92 The phrase this man is in emphatic position in the Greek text.
  3. 93 Grk “according to [his] promise.” The comparative clause “just as he promised” is less awkward in English. Just as he promised. Note how Paul describes Israel’s history carefully to David and then leaps forward immediately to Jesus. Paul is expounding the initial realization of Davidic promise as it was delivered in Jesus.
  4. 94 Grk “John having already proclaimed before his coming a baptism …,” a genitive absolute construction which is awkward in English. A new sentence was begun in the translation at this point.
  5. 95 Grk “he”; the referent (Jesus) has been specified in the context for clarity, since God is mentioned in the preceding context and John the Baptist in the following clause.
  6. 96 John refers here to John the Baptist.
  7. 97 Grk “a baptism of repentance”; the genitive has been translated as a genitive of purpose.
  8. 98 Or “task.”
  9. 99 The verb ἔλεγεν (elegen) has been translated as an iterative imperfect, since John undoubtedly said this or something similar on numerous occasions.
  10. 100 Literally a relative clause, “of whom I am not worthy to untie the sandals of his feet.” Because of the awkwardness of this construction in English, a new sentence was begun here.

ESVEnglish Standard Version

Of this man’s offspring God has brought to Israel a Savior, Jesus, as he promised. Before his coming, John had proclaimed a baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel. And as John was finishing his course, he said, ‘What do you suppose that I am? I am not he. No, but behold, after me one is coming, the sandals of whose feet I am not worthy to untie.’

NIVNew International Version (2011)

“From this man’s descendants God has brought to Israel the Savior Jesus, as he promised. Before the coming of Jesus, John preached repentance and baptism to all the people of Israel. As John was completing his work, he said: ‘Who do you suppose I am? I am not the one you are looking for. But there is one coming after me whose sandals I am not worthy to untie.’

CSBChristian Standard Bible

“From this man’s descendants, as he promised, God brought to Israel the Savior, Jesus. Before his coming to public attention, John had previously proclaimed a baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel. Now as John was completing his mission, he said, ‘Who do you think I am? I am not the one. But one is coming after me, and I am not worthy to untie the sandals on his feet.’

NLTNew Living Translation

“And it is one of King David’s descendants, Jesus, who is God’s promised Savior of Israel! Before he came, John the Baptist preached that all the people of Israel needed to repent of their sins and turn to God and be baptized. As John was finishing his ministry he asked, ‘Do you think I am the Messiah? No, I am not! But he is coming soon—and I’m not even worthy to be his slave and untie the sandals on his feet.’

LEBThe Lexham English Bible

From the descendants of this man, according to his promise, God brought to Israel a Savior, Jesus. Before his coming John had publicly proclaimed a baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel. But while John was completing his mission, he said, ‘What do you suppose me to be? I am not he! But behold, one is coming after me of whom I am not worthy to untie the sandals of his feet!’

KJV 1900King James Version

Of this man’s seed hath God according to his promise raised unto Israel a Saviour, Jesus: When John had first preached before his coming the baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel. And as John fulfilled his course, he said, Whom think ye that I am? I am not he. But, behold, there cometh one after me, whose shoes of his feet I am not worthy to loose.
