Footnotes

  1. 17 Heb “David.” For stylistic reasons the name has been replaced by the pronoun (“he”) in the translation.
  2. 18 Heb “the bones of Saul and the bones of Jonathan his son.” See also v. 13.
  3. 19 Heb “lords.”
  4. 20 Heb “stolen.”
  5. 21 Against the , this word is better read without the definite article. The reading is probably here the result of wrong word division, with the letter ה (he) belonging with the preceding word שָׁם (sham) as the he directive (i.e., שָׁמָּה, samah, “to there”).
  6. 22 Heb “had hung them.”
  7. 23 Heb “in the day.”
  8. 24 Heb “Philistines.”
  9. 25 Heb “he”; the referent (David) has been specified in the translation for clarity.
  10. 26 Many medieval Hebrew have here כְּכֹל (kékhol, “according to all”).
  11. 27 Heb “was entreated.” The verb is an example of the so-called niphal tolerativum, with the sense that God allowed himself to be supplicated through prayer (cf. §51.c).

They buried the bones of Saul and his son Jonathan in the tomb of Saul’s father Kish, at Zela in Benjamin, and did everything the king commanded. After that, God answered prayer in behalf of the land.

CSBChristian Standard Bible

he went and got the bones of Saul and his son Jonathan from the citizens of Jabesh-gilead. They had stolen them from the public square of Beth-shan where the Philistines had hung the bodies the day the Philistines killed Saul at Gilboa. David had the bones brought from there. They gathered up the bones of Saul’s family who had been hanged and buried the bones of Saul and his son Jonathan at Zela in the land of Benjamin in the tomb of Saul’s father Kish. They did everything the king commanded. After this, God was receptive to prayer for the land.

NLTNew Living Translation

he went to the people of Jabesh-gilead and retrieved the bones of Saul and his son Jonathan. (When the Philistines had killed Saul and Jonathan on Mount Gilboa, the people of Jabesh-gilead stole their bodies from the public square of Beth-shan, where the Philistines had hung them.) So David obtained the bones of Saul and Jonathan, as well as the bones of the men the Gibeonites had executed.

Then the king ordered that they bury the bones in the tomb of Kish, Saul’s father, at the town of Zela in the land of Benjamin. After that, God ended the famine in the land.
