Footnotes

  1. 6 Heb “on the roof of the house of the king.” So also in vv. 8, 9.
  2. 7 The disjunctive clause highlights this observation and builds the tension of the story.
  3. 8 Heb “he”; the referent (the messenger) has been specified in the translation for clarity.
  4. 9 Heb “and David sent messengers and he took her.”
  5. 10 Heb “he lay with her” (so , ); “he made love to her”; , , “he slept with her.”
  6. 11 The parenthetical disjunctive clause further heightens the tension by letting the reader know that Bathsheba, having just completed her menstrual cycle, is ripe for conception. See P. K. McCarter, II Samuel (), . Since she just had her period, it will also be obvious to those close to the scene that Uriah, who has been away fighting, cannot be the father of the child.

NLTNew Living Translation

Late one afternoon, after his midday rest, David got out of bed and was walking on the roof of the palace. As he looked out over the city, he noticed a woman of unusual beauty taking a bath. He sent someone to find out who she was, and he was told, “She is Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam and the wife of Uriah the Hittite.” Then David sent messengers to get her; and when she came to the palace, he slept with her.
