19:22Whom have you taunted and hurled insults at?

At whom have you shouted,32

and looked so arrogantly?33

At the Holy One of Israel!34

19:23Through your messengers you taunted the sovereign master,35

‘With my many chariots36

I climbed up the high mountains,

the slopes of Lebanon.

I cut down its tall cedars,

and its best evergreens.

I invaded its most remote regions,37

its thickest woods.

19:24I dug wells and drank

water in foreign lands.38

With the soles of my feet I dried up

all the rivers of Egypt.’

Footnotes

  1. 32 Heb “have you raised a voice.”
  2. 33 Heb “and lifted your eyes on high?”
  3. 34 This divine title pictures the Lord as the sovereign king who rules over his covenant people and exercises moral authority over them.
  4. 35 The word is אֲדֹנָי (’adonai), “lord,” but some Hebrew have יְהוָה (yehvah), “Lord.”
  5. 36 The consonantal text (Kethib) has בְּרֶכֶב (bérekhev), but this must be dittographic (note the following רִכְבִּי [rikhbi], “my chariots”). The marginal reading (Qere) בְּרֹב (bérov), “with many,” is supported by many Hebrew and ancient versions, as well as the parallel passage in Isa 37:24.
  6. 37 Heb “the lodging place of its extremity.”
  7. 38 Heb “I dug and drank foreign waters.”

“Whom have you mocked and reviled?

Against whom have you raised your voice

and lifted your eyes to the heights?

Against the Holy One of Israel!

By your messengers you have mocked the Lord,

and you have said, ‘With my many chariots

I have gone up the heights of the mountains,

to the far recesses of Lebanon;

I felled its tallest cedars,

its choicest cypresses;

I entered its farthest lodging place,

its most fruitful forest.

I dug wells

and drank foreign waters,

and I dried up with the sole of my foot

all the streams of Egypt.’

NIVNew International Version (2011)

Who is it you have ridiculed and blasphemed?

Against whom have you raised your voice

and lifted your eyes in pride?

Against the Holy One of Israel!

By your messengers

you have ridiculed the Lord.

And you have said,

“With my many chariots

I have ascended the heights of the mountains,

the utmost heights of Lebanon.

I have cut down its tallest cedars,

the choicest of its junipers.

I have reached its remotest parts,

the finest of its forests.

I have dug wells in foreign lands

and drunk the water there.

With the soles of my feet

I have dried up all the streams of Egypt.”

CSBChristian Standard Bible

Who is it you mocked and blasphemed?

Against whom have you raised your voice

and lifted your eyes in pride?

Against the Holy One of Israel!

You have mocked the Lord through your messengers.

You have said, ‘With my many chariots

I have gone up to the heights of the mountains,

to the far recesses of Lebanon.

I cut down its tallest cedars,

its choice cypress trees.

I came to its farthest outpost,

its densest forest.

I dug wells

and drank water in foreign lands.

I dried up all the streams of Egypt

with the soles of my feet.’

NLTNew Living Translation

“Whom have you been defying and ridiculing?

Against whom did you raise your voice?

At whom did you look with such haughty eyes?

It was the Holy One of Israel!

By your messengers you have defied the Lord.

You have said, ‘With my many chariots

I have conquered the highest mountains—

yes, the remotest peaks of Lebanon.

I have cut down its tallest cedars

and its finest cypress trees.

I have reached its farthest corners

and explored its deepest forests.

I have dug wells in many foreign lands

and refreshed myself with their water.

With the sole of my foot

I stopped up all the rivers of Egypt!’

LEBThe Lexham English Bible

Whom have you mocked and reviled?

And against whom have you have raised your voice

and have haughtily lifted your eyes?

Against the Holy One of Israel!

By the hand of your messengers you have mocked the Lord,

and you have said,

‘With my many chariots I have gone up

to the height of the mountains.

To the remote areas of Lebanon,

I have felled the tallest of its cedars,

the choicest of its cypresses.

I have entered the place of overnight lodging.

Even to the edge of forest of its fertile land.

I dug wells and I drank foreign water,

and I dried up with the sole of my steps

all the canals of Egypt.’

KJV 1900King James Version

Whom hast thou reproached and blasphemed?

And against whom hast thou exalted thy voice,

And lifted up thine eyes on high?

Even against the Holy One of Israel.

By thy messengers thou hast reproached the Lord, and hast said,

With the multitude of my chariots I am come up

To the height of the mountains, to the sides of Lebanon,

And will cut down the tall cedar trees thereof, and the choice fir trees thereof:

And I will enter into the lodgings of his borders, and into the forest of his Carmel.

I have digged and drunk strange waters,

And with the sole of my feet have I dried up all the rivers of besieged places.
