1 Peter 2:7: So the honor is for you who believe, but for those who do not believe, “The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone …”

Footnotes

  1. 13 Grk “it contains,” “it stands.”
  2. 14 Grk “chosen, priceless.”
  3. 15 Grk “the one who believes.”
  4. 16 Grk either “in him” or “in it,” but the OT and NT uses personify the stone as the King, the Messiah whom God will establish in Jerusalem.
  5. 17 The negative (οὐ μή, ou mē) is emphatic: “will certainly not.”
  6. 18 A quotation from Isa 28:16.
  7. 19 Grk “to you who believe is the value,” referring to their perception of the stone in contrast to those who reject (vv. 7b–8). But the expression may also be translated as “to you who believe is this honor,” referring to the lack of shame cited in v. 6b.
  8. 20 Grk “the value” or “the honor,” but the former is preferred since it comes from the same root as “priceless” in vv. 4, 6, and it is in contrast to the negative estimate of the stone by those who reject (vv. 7b–8).
  9. 21 Grk “the head of the corner.”
  10. 22 A quotation from Ps 118:22 (cf. Matt 21:42; Mark 12:10; Luke 20:17; Acts 4:11).
  11. 23 Grk “a stone of stumbling and a rock of offense.” The latter phrase uses the term σκάνδαλον (skandalon), denoting an obstacle to faith, something that arouses anger and rejection.
  12. 24 A quotation from Isa 8:14.
  13. 25 Grk “who stumble,” referring to “those who do not believe” in vs. 7. Because of the length and complexity of the Greek sentence, a new sentence was started here in the translation.
  14. 26 Grk “to which they were also destined.”

ESVEnglish Standard Version

For it stands in Scripture:

“Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone,

a cornerstone chosen and precious,

and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame.”

So the honor is for you who believe, but for those who do not believe,

“The stone that the builders rejected

has become the cornerstone,”

and

“A stone of stumbling,

and a rock of offense.”

They stumble because they disobey the word, as they were destined to do.

NIVNew International Version (2011)

For in Scripture it says:

“See, I lay a stone in Zion,

a chosen and precious cornerstone,

and the one who trusts in him

will never be put to shame.”

Now to you who believe, this stone is precious. But to those who do not believe,

“The stone the builders rejected

has become the cornerstone,”

and,

“A stone that causes people to stumble

and a rock that makes them fall.”

They stumble because they disobey the message—which is also what they were destined for.

CSBChristian Standard Bible

For it stands in Scripture:

See, I lay a stone in Zion,

a chosen and honored cornerstone,

and the one who believes in him

will never be put to shame.

So honor will come to you who believe; but for the unbelieving,

The stone that the builders rejected—

this one has become the cornerstone,

and

A stone to stumble over,

and a rock to trip over.

They stumble because they disobey the word; they were destined for this.

NLTNew Living Translation

As the Scriptures say,

“I am placing a cornerstone in Jerusalem,

chosen for great honor,

and anyone who trusts in him

will never be disgraced.”

Yes, you who trust him recognize the honor God has given him. But for those who reject him,

“The stone that the builders rejected

has now become the cornerstone.”

And,

“He is the stone that makes people stumble,

the rock that makes them fall.”

They stumble because they do not obey God’s word, and so they meet the fate that was planned for them.

LEBThe Lexham English Bible

For it stands in scripture,

“Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone, a chosen and precious cornerstone,

and the one who believes in him will never be put to shame.”

Therefore the honor is for you who believe, but for those who refuse to believe,

“The stone that the builders rejected,

this one has become the cornerstone,”

and

“A stone of stumbling and a rock of offense,”

who stumble because they disobey the word to which also they were consigned.

KJV 1900King James Version

Wherefore also it is contained in the scripture, Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corner stone, elect, precious: and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded. Unto you therefore which believe he is precious: but unto them which be disobedient, the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner, And a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offence, even to them which stumble at the word, being disobedient: whereunto also they were appointed.
