1:18You know that from your empty way of life inherited from your ancestors you were ransomed—not by perishable things like silver or gold, 1:19but by precious blood like that of an unblemished and spotless lamb, namely Christ. 1:20He was foreknown36 before the foundation of the world but37 was manifested in these last times38 for your sake.
Footnotes
- 36 Grk “who was foreknown,” describing Christ in v. 19. Because of the length and complexity of the Greek sentence, a new sentence was started here in the translation.
- 37 Greek emphasizes the contrast between these two clauses more than can be easily expressed in English.
- 38 Grk “at the last of the times.”

NLTNew Living Translation
For you know that God paid a ransom to save you from the empty life you inherited from your ancestors. And it was not paid with mere gold or silver, which lose their value. It was the precious blood of Christ, the sinless, spotless Lamb of God. God chose him as your ransom long before the world began, but now in these last days he has been revealed for your sake.
