8:37“The time will come when the land suffers from a famine, a plague, blight and disease, or a locust63 invasion, or when their enemy lays siege to the cities of the land,64 or when some other type of plague or epidemic occurs. 8:38When all your people Israel pray and ask for help,65 as they acknowledge their pain66 and spread out their hands toward this temple, 8:39then listen from your heavenly dwelling place, forgive their sin,67 and act favorably toward each one based on your evaluation of his motives.68 (Indeed you are the only one who can correctly evaluate the motives of all people.)69

Footnotes

  1. 63 Actually two Hebrew terms appear here, both of which are usually taken as referring to locusts. Perhaps different stages of growth or different varieties are in view.
  2. 64 Heb “in the land, his gates.”
  3. 65 Heb “every prayer, every request for help which will be to all the people, to all your people Israel.”
  4. 66 Heb “which they know, each the pain of his heart.”
  5. 67 The words “their sin” are added for clarification.
  6. 68 Heb “and act and give to each one according to all his ways because you know his heart.” In the Hebrew text vv. 37–39a actually contain one lengthy conditional sentence, which the translation has divided up for stylistic reasons.
  7. 69 Heb “Indeed you know, you alone, the heart of all the sons of mankind.”

“If there is famine in the land, if there is pestilence or blight or mildew or locust or caterpillar, if their enemy besieges them in the land at their gates, whatever plague, whatever sickness there is, whatever prayer, whatever plea is made by any man or by all your people Israel, each knowing the affliction of his own heart and stretching out his hands toward this house, then hear in heaven your dwelling place and forgive and act and render to each whose heart you know, according to all his ways (for you, you only, know the hearts of all the children of mankind),

NIVNew International Version (2011)

“When famine or plague comes to the land, or blight or mildew, locusts or grasshoppers, or when an enemy besieges them in any of their cities, whatever disaster or disease may come, and when a prayer or plea is made by anyone among your people Israel—being aware of the afflictions of their own hearts, and spreading out their hands toward this temple—then hear from heaven, your dwelling place. Forgive and act; deal with everyone according to all they do, since you know their hearts (for you alone know every human heart),

CSBChristian Standard Bible

When there is famine in the land,

when there is pestilence,

when there is blight or mildew, locust or grasshopper,

when their enemy besieges them

in the land and its cities,

when there is any plague or illness,

every prayer or petition

that any person or that all your people Israel may have—

they each know their own affliction—

as they spread out their hands toward this temple,

may you hear in heaven, your dwelling place,

and may you forgive, act, and give to everyone

according to all their ways, since you know each heart,

for you alone know every human heart,

NLTNew Living Translation

“If there is a famine in the land or a plague or crop disease or attacks of locusts or caterpillars, or if your people’s enemies are in the land besieging their towns—whatever disaster or disease there is—and if your people Israel pray about their troubles, raising their hands toward this Temple, then hear from heaven where you live, and forgive. Give your people what their actions deserve, for you alone know each human heart.
