Jeremiah 48:26–28

26 “Make her drunk,

for she has defied the Lord.

Let Moab wallow in her vomit;

let her be an object of ridicule.

27 Was not Israel the object of your ridicule?

Was she caught among thieves,

that you shake your head in scorn

whenever you speak of her?

28 Abandon your towns and dwell among the rocks,

you who live in Moab.

Be like a dove that makes its nest

at the mouth of a cave.

26 “Make him drunk, because he magnified himself against the Lord, so that Moab shall wallow in his vomit, and he too shall be held in derision. 27 Was not Israel a derision to you? Was he found among thieves, that whenever you spoke of him you wagged your head?

28 “Leave the cities, and dwell in the rock,

O inhabitants of Moab!

Be like the dove that nests

in the sides of the mouth of a gorge.

26 Make ye him drunken: for he magnified himself against the Lord:

Moab also shall wallow in his vomit,

And he also shall be in derision.

27 For was not Israel a derision unto thee?

Was he found among thieves?

For since thou spakest of him, thou skippedst for joy.

28 O ye that dwell in Moab, leave the cities, and dwell in the rock,

And be like the dove that maketh her nest in the sides of the hole’s mouth.

26 “Let him stagger and fall like a drunkard,

for he has rebelled against the Lord.

Moab will wallow in his own vomit,

ridiculed by all.

27 Did you not ridicule the people of Israel?

Were they caught in the company of thieves

that you should despise them as you do?

28 “You people of Moab,

flee from your towns and live in the caves.

Hide like doves that nest

in the clefts of the rocks.

26 “Make him drunk,

Because he exalted himself against the Lord.

Moab shall wallow in his vomit,

And he shall also be in derision.

27 For was not Israel a derision to you?

Was he found among thieves?

For whenever you speak of him,

You shake your head in scorn.

28 You who dwell in Moab,

Leave the cities and dwell in the rock,

And be like the dove which makes her nest

In the sides of the cave’s mouth.

26 “The people of Moab thought they were greater than the Lord,

so punish them until they act as if they are drunk.

Moab will fall and roll around in its own vomit,

and people will even make fun of it.

27 Moab, you made fun of Israel.

Israel was caught in the middle of a gang of thieves.

When you spoke about Israel,

you shook your head and acted as if you were better than it.

28 People in Moab, leave your towns empty

and go live among the rocks.

Be like a dove that makes its nest

at the entrance of a cave.

26 Make ye him drunken; for he magnified himself against Jehovah: and Moab shall wallow in his vomit, and he also shall be in derision. 27 For was not Israel a derision unto thee? was he found among thieves? for as often as thou speakest of him, thou waggest the head. 28 O ye inhabitants of Moab, leave the cities, and dwell in the rock; and be like the dove that maketh her nest over the mouth of the abyss.

26 Make him drunken, for he magnified himself against Jehovah; and Moab shall wallow in his vomit, and he also shall be in derision. 27 For was not Israel a derision unto thee? Was he found among thieves, that as oft as thou didst speak of him, thou didst shake the head? 28 Leave the cities, and dwell in the rocks, ye inhabitants of Moab, and be like the dove, that maketh her nest in the sides of the cave’s mouth.

26 “Get the people of Moab drunk; they have spoken against the Lord. 

They will wallow in their own vomit, and people will laugh at them. 

27 People of Moab, didn’t you laugh at the people of Israel? 

Were they caught among thieves? 

Whenever you talk about them you shake your heads in contempt. 

28 People of Moab, abandon your cities. 

Live among the cliffs. 

Be like doves that make their nests at the entrance of a cave. 

26 “Make him drunk, because he has exalted himself against the Lord. Moab will wallow in his own vomit, and he will also become a laughingstock. 27 Wasn’t Israel a laughingstock to you? Was he ever found among thieves? For whenever you speak of him you shake your head.”

28 Abandon the towns! Live in the cliffs,

residents of Moab!

Be like a dove

that nests inside the mouth of a cave.

26 Make him drunk because he magnified himself against the Lord; let Moab wallow in his vomit; he, too, shall become a laughingstock. 27 Israel was a laughingstock for you, though he was not caught among thieves, but whenever you spoke of him you shook your head!

28 Leave the towns, and live on the rock,

O inhabitants of Moab!

Be like the dove that nests

on the sides of the mouth of a gorge.

26 “Make him drunk,

because he magnified himself against Yahweh,

and let Moab wallow in his vomit.

And he also will become a laughingstock.

27 Now was not Israel the laughingstock to you?

Or was he found among thieves?

For as often as you spoke over him

you shook your head.

28 Leave the towns and dwell on the rock,

O inhabitants of Moab,

and be like the dove,

it nests on the sides of the mouth of a ravine.

26 “Moab’s people think they are better than I am.

So let their enemies make them drunk.

Let the people get sick and throw up.

Let them roll around in the mess they have made.

Let people laugh at them.

27 Moab, you laughed at Israel, didn’t you?

Were Israel’s people caught among robbers?

Is that why you shake your head at them?

Is that why you make fun of them

every time you talk about them?

28 Leave your towns,

you who live in Moab.

Go and live among the rocks.

Be like a dove that makes its nest

at the mouth of a cave.
