Jeremiah 31:29–32

29 “In those days people will no longer say,

‘The parents have eaten sour grapes,

and the children’s teeth are set on edge.’

30 Instead, everyone will die for their own sin; whoever eats sour grapes—their own teeth will be set on edge.

31 “The days are coming,” declares the Lord,

“when I will make a new covenant

with the people of Israel

and with the people of Judah.

32 It will not be like the covenant

I made with their ancestors

when I took them by the hand

to lead them out of Egypt,

because they broke my covenant,

though I was a husband to them,”

declares the Lord.

29 In those days they shall no longer say:

“ ‘The fathers have eaten sour grapes,

and the children’s teeth are set on edge.’

30 But everyone shall die for his own iniquity. Each man who eats sour grapes, his teeth shall be set on edge.

31 “Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah, 32 not like the covenant that I made with their fathers on the day when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt, my covenant that they broke, though I was their husband, declares the Lord.

29 In those days they shall say no more,

The fathers have eaten a sour grape,

And the children’s teeth are set on edge.

30 But every one shall die for his own iniquity:

Every man that eateth the sour grape,

His teeth shall be set on edge.

31 Behold, the days come, saith the Lord,

That I will make a new covenant

With the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah:

32 Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers

In the day that I took them by the hand

To bring them out of the land of Egypt;

Which my covenant they brake,

Although I was an husband unto them, saith the Lord:

29 “The people will no longer quote this proverb:

‘The parents have eaten sour grapes,

but their children’s mouths pucker at the taste.’

30 All people will die for their own sins—those who eat the sour grapes will be the ones whose mouths will pucker.

31 “The day is coming,” says the Lord, “when I will make a new covenant with the people of Israel and Judah. 32 This covenant will not be like the one I made with their ancestors when I took them by the hand and brought them out of the land of Egypt. They broke that covenant, though I loved them as a husband loves his wife,” says the Lord.

29 In those days they shall say no more:

And the children’s teeth are set on edge.’

30 But every one shall die for his own iniquity; every man who eats the sour grapes, his teeth shall be set on edge.

31 “Behold, the days are coming, says the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah—32 not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt, My covenant which they broke, though I was a husband to them, says the Lord.

29 “At that time people will no longer say:

‘The parents have eaten sour grapes,

and that caused the children to grind their teeth from the sour taste.’

30 Instead, each person will die for his own sin; the person who eats sour grapes will grind his own teeth.

31 “Look, the time is coming,” says the Lord,

“when I will make a new agreement

with the people of Israel

and the people of Judah.

32 It will not be like the agreement

I made with their ancestors

when I took them by the hand

to bring them out of Egypt.

I was a husband to them,

but they broke that agreement,” says the Lord.

29 In those days they shall say no more, The fathers have eaten sour grapes, and the children’s teeth are set on edge. 30 But every one shall die for his own iniquity: every man that eateth the sour grapes, his teeth shall be set on edge.

31 Behold, the days come, saith Jehovah, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah: 32 not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which my covenant they brake, although I was a husband unto them, saith Jehovah.

29 In those days they shall say no more, The fathers have eaten sour grapes, and the children’s teeth are set on edge: 30 for every one shall die for his own iniquity; every man that eateth the sour grapes, his teeth shall be set on edge. 31 Behold, days come, saith Jehovah, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah: 32 not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers, in the day of my taking them by the hand, to lead them out of the land of Egypt; which my covenant they broke, although I was a husband unto them, saith Jehovah.

29 “When those days come, people will no longer say, ‘Fathers have eaten sour grapes, and their children’s teeth are set on edge.’ 30 But each person will die for his own sin. Whoever eats sour grapes will have his own teeth set on edge. 

31 “The days are coming,” declares the Lord, “when I will make a new promiseto Israel and Judah. 32 It will not be like the promise that I made to their ancestors when I took them by the hand and brought them out of Egypt. They rejected that promise, although I was a husband to them,” declares the Lord.

29 “In those days, it will never again be said:

The fathers have eaten sour grapes,

and the children’s teeth are set on edge.

30 Rather, each will die for his own wrongdoing. Anyone who eats sour grapes—his own teeth will be set on edge.

31 “Look, the days are coming”—this is the Lord’s declaration—“when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah. 32 This one will not be like the covenant I made with their ancestors when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt—a covenant they broke even though I had married them” —the Lord’s declaration.

29 In those days they shall no longer say:

“The parents have eaten sour grapes,

and the children’s teeth are set on edge.”

30 But all shall die for their own sins; the teeth of the one who eats sour grapes shall be set on edge.

31 The days are surely coming, says the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah. 32 It will not be like the covenant that I made with their ancestors when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt—a covenant that they broke, though I was their husband, says the Lord.

29 “In those days they will say no longer, ‘Parents have eaten unripe fruit, and the teeth of the children are set on edge.’ 30 But each will die because of his iniquity, everyone who eats the unripe fruit, their teeth will be set on edge.

31 Look, the days are coming,” declares Yahweh, “and I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah, 32 not like the covenant that I made with their ancestors on the day of my grasping them by their hand, bringing them out from the land of Egypt, my covenant that they themselves broke, though I myself was a master over them,” declares Yahweh.

29 “In those days people will no longer say,

‘The fathers have eaten sour grapes.

But the children have a bitter taste in their mouths.’

30 Instead, everyone will die for his own sin. The one who eats sour grapes will taste how bitter they are.

31 “A new day is coming,” announces the Lord.

“I will make a new covenant

with the people of Israel.

I will also make it with the people of Judah.

32 It will not be like the covenant

I made with their people long ago.

That was when I took them by the hand.

I led them out of Egypt.

But they broke my covenant.

They did it even though I was like a husband to them,”

announces the Lord.
