Isaiah 48:9–10

9 For my own name’s sake I delay my wrath;

for the sake of my praise I hold it back from you,

so as not to destroy you completely.

10 See, I have refined you, though not as silver;

I have tested you in the furnace of affliction.

9 “For my name’s sake I defer my anger;

for the sake of my praise I restrain it for you,

that I may not cut you off.

10 Behold, I have refined you, but not as silver;

I have tried you in the furnace of affliction.

9 For my name’s sake will I defer mine anger,

And for my praise will I refrain for thee,

That I cut thee not off.

10 Behold, I have refined thee, but not with silver;

I have chosen thee in the furnace of affliction.

9 Yet for my own sake and for the honor of my name,

I will hold back my anger and not wipe you out.

10 I have refined you, but not as silver is refined.

Rather, I have refined you in the furnace of suffering.

9 “For My name’s sake I will defer My anger,

And for My praise I will restrain it from you,

So that I do not cut you off.

10 Behold, I have refined you, but not as silver;

I have tested you in the furnace of affliction.

9 But for my own sake I will be patient.

People will praise me for not becoming angry

and destroying you.

10 I have made you pure, but not by fire, as silver is made pure.

I have purified you by giving you troubles.

9 For my name’s sake will I defer mine anger, and for my praise will I refrain for thee, that I cut thee not off. 10 Behold, I have refined thee, but not as silver; I have chosen thee in the furnace of affliction.

9 For my name’s sake I will defer mine anger, and for my praise will I refrain as to thee, that I cut thee not off. 10 Behold, I have refined thee, but not as silver; I have chosen thee in the furnace of affliction.

9 For my name’s sake I’ll be patient. 

For my glory’s sake I’ll hold my anger back from you, 

rather than destroy you. 

10 I have refined you, 

but not like silver. 

I have tested you in the furnace of suffering. 

9 I will delay My anger for the honor of My name,

and I will restrain Myself for your benefit and for My praise,

so that you will not be destroyed.

10 Look, I have refined you, but not as silver;

I have tested you in the furnace of affliction.

9 For my name’s sake I defer my anger;

for the sake of my praise I restrain it for you,

so that I may not cut you off.

10 See, I have refined you but not like silver;

I have tested you in the furnace of adversity.

9 For the sake of my name I refrain from my anger,

and for my praise I restrain it for you

so as not to cut you off.

10 Look! I have refined you, but not like silver;

I have chosen you in the furnace of misery.

9 For the honor of my own name I put off showing my anger.

I hold it back from you so people will continue to praise me.

I do not want to destroy you.

10 I have put you to the test in the furnace of suffering.

I have tried to make you pure.

But I did not use as much heat as it takes to make silver pure.
